A Call to Action by the State of Indiana:Assessable, Affordable, Accountable Indiana Commission of Higher Education (September 2008) • Moving beyond college access to degree success • Ensuring college is affordable • Embracing accountability for results • In Indiana, only 36% of high school graduates earn a college degree in 4 years, 57% do so in 6 years.

Purdue Calumet Dual Credit Program • Certified by the Indiana Commission of Higher Education and the Indiana Department of Education. • Recognized by the United States Department of Education. • Ensure rigor and overall quality of courses. The courses at HAST are PUC courses. • Ensure that students develop foundational skills that are essential to college attainment and workforce readiness. These include oral and written communication skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving techniques. • Strive to prepare students to be successful in our ever changing global society.
Creation of Dual Credit Courses:HAST and PUC Faculty Partnerships • University Lead faculty member paired with a high school teacher (high school teacher will teach the course under the supervision of the university faculty member). • Collaborate on curriculum and pedagogy. • Align the high school course with the university course. • Determine means of assessment/rubrics.
Courses Offered at HAST in 2012-2013 • All courses are general education and are included in the Indiana College Transfer Library • Communication/Speech (Spring 2013) • English Composition (Fall 2012) • Introduction to Sociology (Spring 2013) • Introduction to Psychology (Fall 2012)
Quality control and Inter-Rater Reliability • Blind grading of random samples (15%) • Different metrics used including Krippendorf’s Alpha, Standard Deviation, and Pearson Correlation • Quantitative/Standardized Assessment (common exams)
Lessons Learned from 2009-2011Courses taught at the high school were rigorous university courses and the unique and evolving faculty partnerships worked to achieve demonstrated and measurable quality • Ensured quality and integrity of university curriculum • Rigorous instruction through the unique partnership • 1900 credit hours earned by students in the first year • 87% of students earned college credit • Overall student assessment of learning was excellent!
Moving Forward • Courses have been selected for next year. • Faculty are currently collaborating on curriculum development. • Students will begin the process of admission and registration in the coming weeks. • Students will be billed by PUC when admission and registration is complete. Free and reduced lunch students will not be charged. • English Composition and Introduction to Psychology cost $25 per credit hour ($75). Introduction to Communication and Introduction to Sociology are $101.55 per credit hour ($304.65).
Applying for the Dual Credit program with Purdue University Calumet • Complete the Dual Credit application by May 31st for Fall semester (applications will be handed out tonight and also available in the Guidance Office). • Parent and student sign application. • Turn in application to Guidance Office for Principal or Guidance Counselor approval and signature by May 31st. Transcripts will be attached to each application by the Guidance Office • Applications and transcripts will be picked up by a Purdue University Calumet representative on June1st. • Students will receive a letter once the applications are processed.
