  10. Fluency: Tone of Voice Listen as I read “The Trumpet of the Swans.” As I read, notice how I vary my tone of voice as I read dialogue to reflect characters’ emotions and make the reading lively. Be ready to answer questions after I finish.

  73. Fact and Opinion A statement of fact can be correct or incorrect. You can check it by doing research. A statement of opinion should be supported. A valid opinion is supported by facts or good logic. A faulty opinion is not. Some sentences contain both statements of fact and statements of opinion.
  74. Author’s Viewpoint The author’s viewpoint is the way an author looks at his or her subject. Look at the statements of opinion an author expresses and the statements of fact the author chooses to include. Try to figure out the author’s viewpoint even when it is not stated directly.
  75. Homonyms Homonyms are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and origins. For example, story can be a tale or a level of a building. You can use context clues to determine appropriate meanings. Use the chart to provide other homonyms from Adelina’s Whales.List two meanings for each word and circle the meaning used in the story.
