Basic Information • The Scottsboro Boys were a group of 9 black boys who were accused of allegedly raping two white girls. • Their trial took place 12 days after their arrest. It took place in the courtroom of Judge A.E. Hawkins.
NAACP • The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), was a group that decided not to help the Scottsboro Boys during their trial because one of their main rules was that rape was a politically explosive charge in the South.
Members • 1. Clarence Norris • 2. Charlie Weems • 3. Haywood Patterson • 4. Olen Montgomery • 5. Ozie Powell • 6. Willie Roberson • 7. Eugene Williams • 8. Andy Wright • 9. Roy Wright
The Trial • After the trial, eight of the nine boys were sentenced to death. • The ninth boy wasn’t sentenced to death because he was only 13 years old.
Their Defense • They could not afford an attorney. • Judge A.E. Hawkins gave them a forgetful 70 year old attorney.
Connections • The Scottsboro Boys had a large impact on To Kill A Mockingbird because African-Americans were usually targeted during an investigation.
