Welcome to the Summer Olympics! A Multidisciplinary Unit By Jeffrey Jones
Did you know? • The first Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece. • Some of the earliest events included running, wrestling, boxing, and chariot races. • No women were allowed to compete until the year 1900. • The first awards for victory were olive branch crowns.
The Modern Olympics • There are a wide variety of events to participate in. Some of the common ones are gymnastics, track and field, and swimming. Some of the lesser known ones are badminton, fencing, and dressage - a horse riding event.
The Ancient Games • During the first 13 Olympic games the only event was the footrace. By the 18th Olympiad, two new sports, the Pentathlon and wrestling had been added. • The Marathon, which originated in Greece, is still one of the most famous of all the Olympic events.
The Summer Olympics Unit • In this unit, students will explore other countries and cultures. They will have the opportunity to make maps of different countries, drawings of athletes, see how athletes train, and produce profiles on the athlete of their choice, as well as other projects.
The Olympic Oath "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in theseOlympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in thetrue spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams.” Written by Baron de Coubertin, the oath is taken by an athlete from the host nation while holding a corner of the Olympic flag. The athletes' oath was first taken by Belgian fencer Victor Boin at the 1920 Antwerp Games. A judge from the host country also speaks the oath, with slightly different wording.
Do your best! • What really counts in this unit is to try your best in all the activities. It is not so important who comes in first place or any other place. The spirit of true competition is to simply do all you can whether you win or lose, and to be a good sport.
Sample Events • Students will participate in events that include sprints, broad jumping and throwing. An obstacle course is also an option.
Thank You! • I hope you enjoy this unit on the Summer Olympics! Thank you for watching this presentation!
