Nontraditional Individualized Supports • As part it its strategic visioning Westchester Arc has formed learning circles to promote innovation and individualized support. • Our learning circle is devoted to building the agency’s capacity for individualized and nontraditional residential supports.

  3. Questions • What do individuals and their families want in terms of residential options? • How can Westchester Arc be more responsive to what individuals and their families want? • What are the alternatives to traditional group homes and supportive apartments?

  4. How can we create models for individualized residential supports and services that can be replicated to support other individuals? • How do we build and maintain partnerships with self advocates and their families and government to develop and sustain quality individualized residential support options?

  5. Commitments • Go on learning journeys • Form and support a change team • Time away from other work to do the work of innovation • To help create lives of distinction • A tolerance for risk and change • Willingness to consider re-inventing existing supports • Try innovation that doesn’t bring new money

  6. Listening • Government funding has dictated the types of residential opportunities available to individuals with developmental disabilities in New York State. • Families and individuals who want something different have not had many options. • Listening to self advocates and their families • Hearing that they want something different in terms if residential options.

  7. Learning Institute ll • Evaluate current residential services in terms of individualization • Learn more about innovative residential supports being provided elsewhere. • Visit sites of innovation and interact with other groups and individuals who are also working in this area • A community of practice

  8. Objective • Develop and provide nontraditional individualized residential supports for 4 individuals who are friends and who wish to live together or nearby each other. • Achieve a successful a level of individualized supports innovation, • Use this knowledge to continue to transform and enhance our residential services.
