  2. BLOG  PHOTOPIC VS. SCOTOPIC LUMENS FOR LED LIGHTS There is much more that goes into lighting design than what meets the eye. To the ordinary individual, reaching and using good light quality light might seem like an easy thing to do. Such a mindset is incorrect considering that it usually takes a lot of effort to correctly light up a room, especially according to a specific purpose. Contrary to the belief of many people, the use of high-foot candles will always mean that the lighting is proper. However, it is always possible to achieve better lighting using a lower-foot candle. Most of you must be wondering how this is possible. Such a scenario can be achieved by considering lamps' two distinctive kinds of lumen outputs. The first one is photopic lumen output. Photopic lumens represent the sensitivity of our eyes under intense lighting conditions. The full outdoor sun is an excellent example of a lighting condition that matches this description. Photopic lumen output is described as the amount of light registered by the human eye. The cones in our eyes are the photoreceptor cells responsible for this kind of light interaction between humans and the environment. Cones are highly active during the day or when the lighting conditions are expectedly high. This is to say that photopic lumen output measures the amount of light registered by these photoreceptors (cones). Photopic lumen output is measured by footcandle meters and standard lumen.
