  1. Technology and Operational Results of REpower 6MJens GoessweinHead of Product Management,Business Unit OffshoreEOW 2009Stockholm, 2009-09-15

  2. Agenda Technology 6M Operational Results Projects & Lessons Learned

  3. Key Data • Rated power: 6.150 kW • Rotor diameter: 126 m • Masses: • Rotor: ~130 to. • Nacelle: ~330 to. • Tower (100 m HH onshore): ~433 to. • Tower (offshore, 65 m long): ~250 to. Design Parameters • Design wind speed: 10,5 m/s • Type Class IEC 1b & S-class GL Offshore TC I

  4. Major Changes 6M to 5M • Higher voltage of 6,6 kV (instead of 950 V) in generator stator • Water cooling of generator (air – water – air) • New gear box (higher torque) • Utilisation of REpower control system REguard Control B • Adaptation of transformer to the higher voltage and power • Optimization of the platform

  5. Mechanical System (identical / similar to 5M) Electrical single blade pitch Double bearing of rotor shaft Welded main- and generator frame 2-step planetary gear box with one spur wheel Yaw system with 8 drives and 8 active breaks

  6. Synchronizer with filter for harmonics Dry type transformer (30 kV or 33 kV) • Air to air cooling Electrical cabinets (UPS, Converter, Top Box) DFIG generator • 6 pole, 660 V / 6.6 kV) • Air / water / air cooling IGBT Converter (modular) • Water to air cooling Electrical System

  7. Onboard crane for O&M Helicopter hoist on top of nacelle Dehumidification of tower and nacelle Indirect ventilation through heat exchangers Automatic fire protection system CMS & Oil Particle Counter Enhanced corrosion protection Offshore Features (examples)

  8. Power Curve and Energy Yield Comparison

  9. Agenda Technology 6M Operational Results Projects & Lessons Learned

  10. 17 turbines up and running 9 onshore (Germany) 8 offshore (UK and Belgium) Total operating hours of the fleet: 171,020 (19.5 years) Average turbine life: ~ 14 months Average tech. availability in 2009: > 95-98% Track Record 5M (as of 30 Aug. 2009)

  11. Prototype Project • 3 x 6M: wind farm Ellhoeft / Westre • Location: Ellhoeft, Schleswig-Holstein • Customer: 220 private investorsfrom Germany and Denmark(Buergerwindpark / Cooperative) • Installation: Q1 / 2009 • Status: all 3 WEC in full operation

  12. Operational Experience (3 x 6M Prototypes) Operational data Energy yield Tech. availability April 2009 < 1 GWh commissioning May 2009 1.54 GWh commissioning June 2009 1.98 GWh 80% July 2009 1.40 GWh 86% August 2009 1.71 GWh 92% September 01.-13. 2009 98%

  13. Validation & Certification Measurements • Power Curve • Sound power level • Load measurements • Grid (with FRT & further tests) Certification • Type approval German DIBT • Type Certificate IEC • Certification GL Offshore

  14. Market Introduction 6M • Prototype: Q1 - 2009 • Initial batch: 2010 / 2011 • Offshore – Projects: from 2012

  15. Agenda Technology 6M Operational Results Projects & Lessons Learned

  16. Projects 5M and 6M

  17. Lessons Learned year: 1 2 3 Contract signing Installation of infrastructure Installation of WTG … please don‘t forget year 0 Take your time for proper planning, interface management, tower and foundation design and the reservation of suitable installation equipment. Compromise wins the trick Offshore is a risky business – there are always changes, delays and potential extra costs. No contract can allow for all of them – so you need compromises and project managers with the mandate to deal with them.
