  1. What is Cancer? By: Kristen Murphy

  2. Definition: Cancer is the overall name for a category of more than 100 diseases where the cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. There are many different kinds of cancer, but they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerBasics/what-is-cancer

  3. Prevention Cancer prevention is easier than most think. With a couple lifestyle changes, you can drastically reduce your risk of many types of cancer. Many thingsplay a role in cancer development, but the good news is that most can be avoided. Choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lowers the risk of several types of cancer. (this applies to secondhand smoke also) • The known risk factors for cancer include: • Radiation • Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation • Viruses • Chemicals • Tobacco • Alcohol • Diet

  4. Benign tumors vs. Malignant tumors Benign is considered non-cancerous and malignant is cancerous. Benign tumors rarely are life threatening and do not spread to other parts of the body. They can often be removed. Malignant tumors, however, often invade nearby tissue and organs, spreading the disease

  5. Treatment There are four standard methods of treatment for cancer: • surgery, • Chemotherapy • radiation therapy • immunotherapy/biologic therapy. • When initially diagnosed with cancer, a Oncologist will provide the patient with different cancer treatment options. They will recommend the best treatment plan based on the type of cancer, how far it has spread, and other important factors like age and general health. • Extracting cancer cells and looking at them under a microscope is the only absolute way to diagnose cancer.
