“Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
First Things First • A “Summer” Issue • Need a “Dress Code” • Need a clear understanding of what should govern • the way that Christians act in all areas of life • 1 Peter 1:13-17 • “be HOLY in all your conduct” [vs. 15-17] “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Governing Principle of Christian Conduct HOLINESS • Has always been the governing principle of conduct • for those who would serve God • In Eden: Genesis 1:26-27 and 3:17 • Before the Law: Ex. 19:9-15 and Num. 20:9-12 • Under the Law: Lev. 10:1-7; 20:22-26 (Law purpose) • Under Christ: Romans 12:1-2 and 1 Peter 4:11 • Not simply different; must be toward God • Different from world becauseof TRUTH: John 17:17 “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Governing Principle of Christian Conduct HOLINESS • We know true holiness only from God’s word • Says NOTHING specifically about: • swimming pools, men w/o shirts, girls in swimsuits • However: Gal. 3:23-24; Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11 • God has given us enough information concerning • the principle of holiness; we can make application • 2 Cor. 6:15 – 7:1: We must make proper application “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Not culturally • “Fashion”, accepted/taught/common practice, etc. • The culture we live in is NOT our guide! • Rom. 12:1-2; Lev. 20:22-26; etc. “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Not culturally • Not situationally • “Bikini” okay; Bra and panties NOT okay?! (etc.) • Okay nude at public beach, not on public street? • Revealing clothing o.k. at wedding, formal event? • Situational modesty is not modesty; a way of life • 1 Pet. 3:1-4; etc. {ex: shirt on to study Bible} “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Not culturally • Not situationally • Not generationally or by gender • Modesty not age-specific {“grandma’s fashion”} • Even the youngdressed like grandma in her day; • thought their grandmas were old-fashioned! • Tit. 2:3-5; grandmas to teach discretion, chastity • to the young women! {Are they teaching?} “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Not culturally • Not situationally • Not generationally or by gender • Modesty not age-specific {“grandma’s fashion”} • Modesty not gender-specific {no double standard} • 1 Cor. 12:23-4; “presentable” & “unpresentable” • parts on the body, whether male or female “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Not culturally • Not situationally • Not generationally or by gender • Read/Study God’srevelation concerning the issue • 2 Timothy 3:16-17; “thoroughly equipped” • 1 Corinthians 2:9-13; the mind of God revealed “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • In Eden: • BEFORE sin: Genesis 2:25 • “naked…not ashamed” • AFTER knowledge of sin: Genesis 3:7-10; 21 • “coverings”; “tunics...clothed” • possible to be “covered”, yet unclothed to God! • “covering” is apron, belt; • “tunic” is covering (hanging from) shoulder, side • Not cultural, situational, generational, by gender “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Before the Law: • Noah: Genesis 9:20-27 • “drunk…uncovered” – not norm; senses impaired • “Ham…saw…nakedness…told his two brothers” • brothers covered nakedness w/o looking • “Noah…knew what his…son had donetohim” • “Cursed be Canaan” was the strong reaction • “uncovered”, “told” similar root; “reveal shame”! “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Under the Law: • Exodus 20:22-26; early altar specifications • No images of silver or gold • No hewn stones; no profaning by men’s tools • No steps; so that your nakedness not exposed • God holy; altar itself holy; their nakedness • must not shame, profane God’s altar! “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Under the Law: • Exodus 20:22-26; early altar specifications • Exodus 28:40-43; priestly garments • Tunics and sashes for Aaron and for his sons • Anoint, consecrate, sanctify; to minister to Me • Trousers to cover nakedness – waist to thighs • These trousers in addition to being covered • already by the tunics and other garments!! • Use when “come near”; that they may not die!!! “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Under the Law: • Exodus 20:22-26; early altar specifications • Exodus 28:40-43; priestly garments • Lev. 18, 20; prohibitions in “uncovering nakedness” • Lev. 18:29 – “abominations”; offenders “cut off” • Lev. 20:17 – “wicked thing”, “bear guilt”, “cut off” • Same law for priest/commoner, male/female “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Under the Law: • Exodus 20:22-26; early altar specifications • Exodus 28:40-43; priestly garments • Lev. 18, 20; prohibitions in “uncovering nakedness” • In the prophetic literature – accompanies shame • Isa. 20:1-5 – “buttocks uncovered”, shame • Isa. 47:1-3 – thigh uncovered = nakedness, shame • God used their understanding of shame to teach “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Under Christ: • We are all priests, “coming near” God’s throne • 1 Pet. 2:5,9; Heb. 4:16, 10:22 – always serving • “Lewdness” (suggestiveness) a work of the flesh • Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 4:17-24; for men or women! • “modest” = that which is properly measured • 1 Tim. 2:8-10; 1 Pet. 3:1-4; not just revealing • what “adorns” should be character, not clothing! • should call attention to Christ, not self “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) • Spiritually naked? • Revelation 3:17-18; 7:14; 19:8 • “clothed” with righteous acts • use for spiritual teaching emphasizes importance “Can a man swim in a swimming pool without a shirt, or a girl with just a swimsuit?” Part 2
Steps Toward Holiness Seeing (modesty) as God sees (modesty) Repent • 1 Peter 2:1-3 • Must put away malice, hypocrisy in order to grow • After learning truth, must turn to it and do it!
