Chicago to Omaha Regional Passenger Rail Planning Study Transportation Commission Update May 8, 2012
Route alternatives analysis • Process is defined by the National Environmental Policy Act • Goal of Process • Identify “reasonable and feasible” routes • Eliminate “unreasonable and infeasible” routes • Routes deemed reasonable and feasible are evaluated in detail in Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement
Chicago-Omaha route alternatives Route 1 – CN Route 2 – UP Route 3 – CP/BNSF Route 4 – CSX/IAIS Route 5 – BNSF Route 4-A – BNSF/IAIS
Route evaluation process Following Fine-level Screening, the No-Build and Route 4-A alternatives are proposed to be carried forward in the Tier 1 Service Level EIS. Route 4-A will be carried forward because, compared to other route alternatives, it: Best meets project purpose and need. Has nearly the lowest construction complexity and lowest construction costs. Has modest grade crossing complexity. Does not require a new bridge over the Mississippi River. Is the shortest route alternative. Has close to the shortest travel time. Serves the largest population. Has a direct connection to Union Station in downtown Chicago. Has no unreasonable environmental resource issues.
