Mars Project(s): tasks • Using Mars Express HRSC • & other datasets
What is needed • needed tools • miniVICAR • gimp • ISIS • needed data • HRSC et al.
General approach • Choose your HRSC scene(s) over an area of your choice on Mars (with PSA) • Find recent literature on the area (e.g. on ADS) • Analyze the geology and geomorphology of the area with color and stereo information • Get higher resolution data for detailed observations
Lots of interesting places.. 2 3 1 1,2,3 indicate possible area for projects (see next slides)
H0360_0000_ND3 Possible projects:1) Valles Marineris • Objective: observe and analyze the canyon structure, walls and interior • Tasks: • characterize the morphology and color of surface materials • determine the local depth and thickness of deposits (using MOLA), use high-res images (MOC) • HRSC orbit: e.g. 0360
Possible projects:2) The North Pole • Objective: analyze the structure and morphology of North Pole layered deposits • Tasks: • characterize the morphology and color of surface materials • Make high-resolution observations using e.g. MOC • HRSC orbit: e.g. 1177 H1177_0000_ND3
Possible projects:3) Olympus Mons • Objective: study Mons Olympus volcano and aureole • Tasks: • characterize the morphology and color of volcano flanks, caldera, aureole • Make high-resolution observations using e.g. MOC, measure height with MOLA • HRSC orbit: e.g. 1437 H1437_0001_ND3
What to do • basic description of procedure(s) • search for data and get them from PSA (check BROWSE .jpg on PSA ftp site) • open level2 data with “xvd” • get all needed spice kernels • process level2 data with “hrortho” • produce level 3 data using a MARS IAU2000 ellipsoid • produce anaglyphs and RGB • visualize processed RGB, anaglyph, with “xvd”, “Gimp” • if possible, perform pan-sharpening We’ll see how to do these things during the tutorials
