  3. 1. Product Information Electrolyte-glucose mixturetocompensatefordehydration

  4. 2. Key Benefits • electrolyte Denk is a WHO recommended oral rehydration solution. • electrolyte Denk is hypotonic-for the most rapid rehydration. • Important elctrolytes, glucose and zinc for fast replenishment of physical reserves and to compensate for dehydration. • Oral rehydration therapy may lower the mortality rate of diarrhoea by as much as 93%.2 • Practical hygienic formulation packs of 200 ml – ideal for in the go or holidays. • Lemon grapefruit taste for the easy intake.

  5. 3. Target Group Excessive sweating-> You lose water when you sweat. If you do vigorous activity and don't replace fluids as you go along, you can become dehydrated. Diarrhea, vomiting (Adults & Children) -> severe, acute diarrheacan cause a tremendous loss of water and electrolytes in a short amount of time. Fever-> In general, the higher your fever, the more dehydrated you may become. If you have a fever in addition to diarrhea and vomiting, you lose even more fluids.

  6. 4. Ingredients electrolyte Denkishypotonic(225 – 280 mOsm/L)in ordertoallowforthemost rapid rehydration!

  7. Train theBrain List some key benefits of electrolyte Denk! • electrolyte Denk is a WHO recommended oral rehydration solution (ORS) with reduced osmolarity. • Important elctrolytes, glucose and zinc for fast replenishment of physical reserves and to compensate for dehydration. • Oral rehydration therapy may lower the mortality rate of diarrhoea by as much as 93% • Practical hygienic formulation packs of 200 ml – ideal for in the go or holidays. • Lemon grapefruit taste for the easy intake.

  8. 5. Posology & Administration Recommended Intake • Dissolve the contents of one stick in 200 ml of drinking water. • Boiled and cooled water can be used if drinking water is not available • Prepare the solution immediately before use • Infants and toddlers should not receive more than 5 sticks electrolyte Denk per day. How to give electrolyte Denk for children? • The solution should be given to infants and youngchildren using a clean spoon or cup. • Feeding bottles should not be used. • Consult your doctor if vomiting, fever,or diarrhea continues beyond 24 hours orif consumption needs are greater than 1 liter per day.

  9. 6. Benefits Glucose Glucose facilitates the absorption of sodium (and hence water) in the small intestine. Sodium The body needs Sodium Chloride for the function of nerves and muscles. It also helps to keep the right balance of fluids in the body Potassium Potassium is important for muscle contraction, cardiovascular function and use in the nervous and digestive system. Chloride Chloride is needed to keep the proper balance of body fluids. Too little chloride in the body can occur when the body loses a lot of fluids. Zinc Zinc is essential for protein synthesis, cell growth, immune function and intestinal transport of water and electrolytes.

  10. 7. Body water Distribution of total body water among compartments • Water represents on average 60 % of the body weight in men and 50-55% in women. • Most of the organs and tissues contain more than 70% water. • Adipose tissue contains only 10% of water. Total body water 60 % of body weight(70 kg -> 42 L)

  11. 8. What are electrolytes ? Definition electrolytes: • Salts and minerals that can conduct electrical impulses in the body. • Common electrolytes include: Potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, magnesium and chloride. Electrolytes affect the body functions in many ways, including: • The amount of water in the body • The acidity in the blood (pH) • Muscle contraction • Energy generation • Biochemical reactions in the body Levels of electrolytes in the body can become too low -> that can happen when the amount of water in your body changes causing dehydration

  12. 9. What is a hypotonic solution? Hypotonic solution for rapid rehydration • Osmolarity measures the total concentration of soluble ingredients in a solution. • Solution osmolarity can be hypertonic, isotonic and hypotonic.

  13. Train theBrain What are the ingredients of electrolyte Denk? • Glucose • Sodium • Potassium • Chloride • Zinc

  14. 10. Dehydration • Whatisdehydration? • Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. • Causes of Dehydration • Sweating too much, for example, from exercising in hot weather • Vomiting or diarrhea • Fever • Increased urination • No access to safe drink water • Signs of mild to moderate dehydration  • Thirst • Dry or sticky mouth • Not urinating much, darker yellow urine • Dry, cool skin • Headache • Muscle cramps Signsofseveredehydration !

  15. 11. Diarrhea • Whatisdiarrhea? • Diarrhea is frequent, loose, and watery bowel movements • If your body does not absorb the fluids, or if your digestive system produces extra fluids, stools will be loose and watery. • Acute diarrhealasts a short time and usually lasts only 1 or 2 days. • Diarrhea that lasts for at least 4 weeks is called chronic diarrhea. • What causes diarrhea? • Bacteria from contaminatedfoods or water • Viruses • Parasites • Medicines such as antibiotics • Diseases that affect the stomach, small intestine or colon • Problems digesting certain foods • The most severe threat posed by diarrhea is dehydration. • During a diarrheal episode, water and electrolytes are lost through liquid stools, vomit, sweat, urine and breathing. • The only effective treatment for dehydration is to replace lost fluids and lost electrolytes with

  16. 11.1 Key Facts about Diarrhea • Diarrhea kills more children than malaria, measles and AIDS combined • Diarrhea kills 2195 children every day • Diarrhea is a leading cause of malnutrition in children under 5 years old

  17. 11.2 Diarrhea-Treatment Assessment ofdiarrheapatientsfordehydration

  18. 11.3 Nutrition tips during acute diarrhea • Make sure to drink enough water and herbal teas. • Rusk is very digestible, light and doesn’t lie heavy in your stomach. • Grated apple and mashed bananas contain a lot of pectin, an important fibre, which hardens the stool. • Rice in combination with salt has a binding effect. • Potatoes contain a lot of potassium and can be easily absorbed. • Soup with carrots contains a lot of pectin. Cooked in 1l salted water with a tablespoon of salt it is most effective. • Oatmeal contains important fibres, minerals, vitamin B1 and vitamin E which have a positive effect on the blood sugar level.

  19. 11.4 Prevention of Diarrhea Breastfeeding • Exclusively breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life • Immunological properties: protection of diarrhea • Breastfeeding is clean (no use of bottles, water etc. which are easily contaminated) • Good feeding practices • Should be started when a child is 6 months old • Using hygienic practice when preparing food • Soft mashed foods (e.g. cereals), eggs, meat, fish and fruits, vegetables • Use of safe water • Collect and store water in clean containers • Boil water to kill bacteria • Keep animals away from protected water sources • Regular handwashing • After defecation, after cleaning a child who has defecated, before preparing food/eating • Use soap!

  20. Train theBrain Explain the most severe threat posed by diarrhea! • The most severe threat posed by diarrhea is dehydration. • During a diarrheal episode, water and electrolytes are lost through liquid stools, vomit, sweat, urine and breathing. • Dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. • Signs of mild to moderate dehydration  • Thirst • Dry or sticky mouth • Not urinating much, darker yellow urine • Dry, cool skin • Headache • Muscle cramps

  21. 12. Goodtoknow: Dehydration-Self Care Try to cool the person, if there has been heat exposure or if the person has an elevated temperature, in the following ways: • Remove any excess clothing and loosen other clothing. • Air-conditioned areas are best for helping return body temperatures to normal. • If available, use a spray bottleto spray lukewarm water on exposed skin surfaces. • Avoid exposing skin to excessive cold, such as ice packs or ice water. This can cause the blood vessels in the skin to constrict and will decrease rather than increase heat loss.

  22. 13. Complementary Treatments • Electrolyte-glucose mixture to compensate for dehydration INDICATION: Diarrhea + • Improvement of the immune function after previous diarrhea • Makes the body defense fit and productive
