Adaptive coat colour polymorphism in the Kermode bear of coastal British Columbia Dan R. Klinka And Thomas E. Reimchen
Background • Diversity of colour coat among animals • Prey or Predator • ie Mouse or Cat • Polymorphism is controlled by Mc1r gene
Big Picture • Kermode bear aka Spirit Bear • Western B.C • White Recessive • Researcher Hypothesis
Methods • Roirdan Creek on Gribbel Island • Late Auguest – Early October 2000-2002 • Daylight, Twilight and Darkness • B=37 W=4 • Salmon Response • 4m circle in costume
Results • Capture effieceny W=30.0% B=26.5% • Different among lights • Darkness and Twilight W=22.8% B=25.8% • Daylight W=34.1% B=25.3% • Technique • Salmon Count • Darkness and Twilight same • Daylight W=15.05(1.13) B=8.13(0.86)
Major Findings • White morph more efficient at capturing during the daylight • Consistent with Hypothesis • Predicted that increase foraging activity during daylight. • No suuport
Questions • Other than Birds and Bears name 3 other animals that have the dimorphic characteristics? List the benefits involved for that species. • What other advantages or disadvantages do you believe the Kermode Bear has? • What is the only place in B.C that has a captive Kermode Bear??????
