  1. Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Customary units of weight Let’s warm up : Write <, > or = : 7 fluid ounces (fl. oz) 2 cup (c) 1) < 2) > • 3 cups (c) 1 pint (pt) 3) < • 2 pints (pt) 2 quart (qt) 9 quarts (qt) 2 gallon (gal) 4) > CONFIDENTIAL

  2. Let’s review what we did in the previous chapter CAPACITY: It is a measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. Like, we can say that: A cup of juice is equal to 8 ounces of fluid. An ounces (fl. oz.) is used to measure capacity in the customary system. CONFIDENTIAL

  3. Review • The container has a capacity of 1 gallon. • A coke drink is about 12 fluid ounces. • A regular cup of coffee is about one cup. • A can of oil for the car is about one quart. • A large milk container is about a gallon. CONFIDENTIAL

  4. Review Review When measuring capacity in the customary system the common units used are Ounces, cup, pint, quart, and gallon. From smallest to greatest capacity measurements are compared as: Ounces, cup, pint, quart, and gallon. CONFIDENTIAL

  5. Review Customary Units use to measure the capacity are: CONFIDENTIAL

  6. Today we will learn about the Customary units of measure for weight. WEIGHT: It is a customary measurement that tells how heavy an object is. Like, we can say that: The dog’s weight is equal to 12 pounds. An ounces (oz) is used to measure weight in the customary system. CONFIDENTIAL

  7. History The Babylonians' unit of weight was the ka and theGUR. The GURequaled to about 80 gallons. These were the earliest known units given for weight. The Hebrews' units were the bat, log, and the hin. Like the customary system, the Hebrews had units to measure both dry and wet substances. The Roman system developed thepinteto measure liquid and thequartto measure dry substances. CONFIDENTIAL

  8. The cat’s weight is 9 pounds. • A strawberry’s weight is 1 ounce (oz). • A pineapple’s weight is 1 pound (lb). • A car’s weight is 1 ton (T). CONFIDENTIAL

  9. When measuring capacity in the customary system the common units used are Ounces, pound , and ton . From smallest to greatest capacity measurements are compared as: Ounces, pound and ton . CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Customary Units use to measure the weight are: When converting any unit of measurements if you want: To change to a larger unit, divide. To change to a smaller unit, multiply. CONFIDENTIAL

  11. Reading a Scale Scales show weight in pounds and fractions of a pound which include: halves, fourths, eighths, and sixteenths. • Reading a scale marked with pounds and fractions of a pound is similar to reading a ruler. • The only difference is that a scale has the geometric shape of a circle. CONFIDENTIAL

  12. When reading the scale, find the nearest whole pound before the arrow shown on the scale. • Then find the fraction of a pound that the arrow is pointing to. • The total amount is read as a fraction if it is under a pound, exactly a pound, or a mixed fraction if it is over a pound. CONFIDENTIAL

  13. A shows 9 pound. 16 B shows 1 pound. C shows 3 pounds. 4 1 D shows 1 pounds. 2 2 E shows 1 pounds. 16 3 F shows 5 pounds. 8 3 CONFIDENTIAL

  14. Which is more reasonable for the weight of a bag of oranges – 1 pound or 1 ounce? A bag of oranges is too large to weigh an ounce. An ounce would be the weight of something very light. So, measuring in terms of pound would be more appropriate. CONFIDENTIAL

  15. BREAK CONFIDENTIAL

  16. GAME Click on the link below for some exciting puzzle http://www.thekidzpage.com/onlinejigsawpuzzles/jigsaw-puzzles/12-piece-jigsaw/042305cat.html CONFIDENTIAL

  17. Assignment • What unit would you use to measure the weight for each? • A math book. • An elephant. • A paper napkin. • A bag of apples. 1) pound 2) ton 3) ounce 4) pound CONFIDENTIAL

  18. What is the smallest unit to measure the weight? 1) ounce CONFIDENTIAL

  19. What is the largest unit to measure the weight? 1) ton CONFIDENTIAL

  20. Write <, > or = : 7 ) 15 ounces (oz) 1 pound (lb) 7) < 8) 3,000 pounds (lb) 1 ton (T) 8) > CONFIDENTIAL

  21. Fill in the blanks: 9) divide 9) To change to a larger unit, _______. 10) To change to a smaller unit, _______. 10) multiply CONFIDENTIAL

  22. Very Good! Let's Review WEIGHT: It is a customary measurement that tells how heavy an object is. Like, we can say that: The dog’s weight is equal to 12 pounds.
