How do you measure collegiality? • Need a clear definition and mutual understanding of the expectations • Other terms that could be used are civility or campus citizenship • Need a list of measurable collegial behavior indicators • Be understanding of cultural differences with the list of collegial behaviors, while making it clear that all must act appropriately for the worksite (collegial behavior indicators should be culturally sensitive) Collegiality
Orient students and explain why course evaluations are so important • Have midterm course evaluations for more formative feedback • Focus group approach for student feedback • Work with the Center for Instructional Excellence in WL for peer reviews and programs that emphasize teaching • Develop a culture of working together on teaching • Have new faculty observe senior faculty • Document the process Evaluating Teaching and Learning
Conduct peer review, be reviewed and write a reflection on a course you observed • The self-reflection on preparation for class, feelings and results are more valuable when it is done by the professor who taught the class instead the observer. After the professor receives the observer’s review, he or she can compare his or her own reflection with the observer’s evaluation and will validate the professor’s own reflection (closing the loop) • CL’s really don’t have a voice and they have a lot to offer • They should at least be able to vote on some matters because they teach many courses and have valuable insights • LTL’s are important and should have more support for teaching and learning • Have online teaching vignettes to make professional development more accessible given schedules Teaching and Learning
Faculty should have more training on the promotion and tenure process • Those serving on committees • Those new to the process • Should candidates be strong in all 3 categories on a regional campus? • Service is not counted sufficiently; should service count more? • Associate professors should be also reviewed and provided with written feedback • Each discipline has somewhat different expectations • Need clearer written expectations; reasonable standards • Need to share criteria with P & T committees so faculty understand disciplinary differences Review Process and Post-Tenure Review
