Key Message • Serious VehicleCrash occurs when: • Drivers speed excessively • Change lanes carelessly • And weave in and out of traffic without regard for other vehicles.
Speeding - Reaction Time • Each increase in speed reduces your ability to react in time to hazards, because you may be covering distance in less time than it takes to react • Each increase in speed Normal reaction time is between 0.75 second and 2 seconds. These numbers do not include braking distance, just reaction time • The average difference in reaction-time distance from 50 mph to 70 mph is about 40 feet
Speeding - Reaction Time … • Speeding is more than about exceeding the speed limit. Gauge your speed according to: • Traffic Conditions • Road Conditions • Weather Conditions
Lane Change - Reminders • Keep lane changes to a minimum. Stay in your lane until necessary to change your lane • Try to plan ahead and change your lane in advance depending on the direction you are heading • Maintain safe distance when you see another driver making excessive lane changes
Lane Change – Reminders … • Lane changing and weaving seldom saves time but it might just cause an accident • Check all mirrors and your blind spot before changing your lane
Be Cautious Try to pick the correct lane and stick to it. Excessive lane changing can lead to accidents!!
SAFETY MOMENTS • SAFE DRIVING THROUGH FLOODS
DRIVING RISKS THROUGH FLOODS Nearly half of all flood fatalities are vehicle related; Unusually high force dynamics impact vehicle stability; Diminished brake performance and risk of engine damage;
TIPS FOR SAFE DRIVING THROUGH FLOODS • Avoid flooded areas • Don’t drive through flood water if you are unsure of its depth • Drive at the highest point of the road safely • Keep your fuel tank full so you won't be stranded • Drive slowly and steadily to avoid water suction into engine and exhaust
TIPS FOR SAFE DRIVING THROUGH FLOODS .. • Dry the brakes before you need them • Drive in the tire prints of the car ahead of you for better traction • Have your emergency numbers handy • Do not assume familiarity with roads after a storm/flood BE ALERT: STAY ALIVE!
