EVIDENCE INFORMED DISCUSSIONS:THE ROLE OF PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT KNOWLEDGE ( PCK ) • Use of Relevant Data The importance of collecting and using evidence to improve teaching practice and raising student achievement ( how does this relate to us?) • Partnerships of Respect: The importance of Professional Learning Communities (The Auckland Project), The Cycle of Inquiry ( our process) PCK ( building teacher capacity) • Building an inquiry habit of mind around evidence of informed discussions.
DEVELOPING ACTION RESEARCH • Our top hypotheses from 2010 • Low entry level literacy ability • Lack of school wide reading program • Low literacy level of parents/involvement • Low socio-economic background of students • Competing media • Lack of formal language skills • High number of ESL/NESB students • Students are reluctant readers • Students not motivated to read • Students do not know how to read for meaning • Other ……………………..
The Challenge is . . . • A call to engage so as to improve Reading Comprehension • To unpack the hypotheses to find the why? • Find data to determine the hypotheses
Where we are today We are now in Phase1 developing our hypotheses and participating in Action Research (acknowledging the teacher’s voice)
