Strengthening Information Access and Dissemination in Support of Effective Coral Reef Conservation and Management Moi Khim TAN The WorldFish Center
Introduction • A global online information system on coral reefs • Provides information on location, status, threats and management of coral reefs in over 130 countries and territories • Houses >26,000 References, including >6,000 downloadable publications • Thematic data includes coral bleaching, monitoring sites, Marine Protected Areas, etc.
Lesson Learned in Database Development & Information Management Lack of skills in resources management Poor database design No interest to share the data Common problems No standard format No Metadata No digitization of publications No backup / contingency plan Lack of online access to information
What does ReefBase do? To improve sharing and use of data, information, and knowledge in support of research and management of coral reef resources • Provides easy access to relevant information on key issues related to coral reefs • Provides database & web support to projects / organizations in developing countries
ReefBase website: Global database Serves as the central database for the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN)
ReefBase Online GIS (reefgis.reefbase.org) Created using Demis Mapserver. Fast performance, workable even with slow dial-up modems.
ReefBase Online GIS • Interactive maps via Internet (Web browser) • Display data “live” from database (monitoring sites, coral bleaching, photos, etc.) • Can search & query data using map tools
Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project High-resolution coral reef polygons based on global mapping project (Millennium Coral Reef Mapping Project), funded by NASA.
Monthly updated maps from NOAA showing sea surface temperature anomalies, together with coral bleaching observations (linked to sea water temperature). Works as an early warning system. ReefBase: NOAA DHW

Locally Managed Marine Area Network ReefBase is providing technical assistance, by developing an easy-to-use database system, to ensure that LMMA data is properly and safely strored, and that the LMMA partners can produce standardized site reports by a click of the button.
Online Progress Tracking Report Help to manage and keep track the progress of data collection

Future directions / Activities • Portfolio of information on coral reef and relevant ecosystem - online database (status, threat, management of coral reef) - Reef Fisheries information - biological monitoring data - socioeconomic monitoring data • Enhance our ReefGIS features and dataset • Establishment of partnerships with other organizations to promote effective management coral reef and reef fisheries related information
