History of Bethlehem • Bethlehem was founded by a religious group called the Moravians in 1741. • The Moravians moved from central Europe to Pennsylvania so that they could practice their religious beliefs. • They named the settlement after the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of Jesus.

History of Bethlehem • Besides serving as a religious community, Bethlehem was important for other reasons during early American history. • It created the first public water works program. • George Washington, Martha Washington, Sam Adams, and other famous people from the revolutionary period met in Bethlehem.

It was once the second-largest steel producer in the United States. • The company became a major supplier of armor plate and weaponry during World War I and World War II. • Bethlehem Steel ceased operations there in 1995.
