Purpose and Hypothesis • Purpose: • Find trends in infant deaths in in Section A of the Moiliili Japanese Cemetery. • Possible causes. • Hypothesis: • Most of the infant deaths will be found to have occurred before they turn 1 because of their weaker constitutions. • The deaths will show a trend in which timeframe most of them occurred.
Death Statistics • 42% died before turning 1. • 14% died at 1 years old. • 11 % died at 2 years old. • 5% died at both 3 and 4 years old.
Other Observations • Some families had more than one infant deaths. • Majority of deaths occurred between the 1910s and 1940s. • Many families gave names to their babies, but there were some who did not.
Contingencies • With health records, information on possible disease outbreaks that may have affected children could be found. • Job records could show if money was a cause of health issues. • Data showing an increase or decrease in death rates in Moiliili.
Conclusion • More infant deaths than was expected. • 57 total infant deaths • Most occur between 1910s and 1940s • Possible causes include disease and lack of resources to care for them • Other possible avenues to explore: disease and life conditions during 1910s-1940s
