    1. Older people’s attitudes to work: findings from the CROW Postal Survey Matt Flynn and Stephen McNair

    2. People 50-70: Key Points 50% are in some form of work (8% describe themselves as “retired but in paid work”) Attitudes to work are extremely positive Little difference in attitude between fully retired and employed 18% report age discrimination Workers want to go on, non-workers don’t Half of retired would have liked to stay - if work could have been flexible/part-time

    3. Do people like work?

    4. What do older people find difficult about work?

    5. Do older people want to work after retirement?

    6. What would older people have preferred to retirement?

    7. What kind of work do older people want to do?

    8. Who is most willing to stay in work? Well qualified and in high status jobs Male Well paid and financially secure Enjoy their work Feel valued by employer- but not necessarily encouraged to stay in work Trained in the last 5 years Amenable to job change

    9. Who is most likely to return to work? No/few formal qualifications in routine or trade jobs Male Financially insecure- state pension is only source of income Forced out of work by external factors Most likely to need new skills to return to work Would have liked the chance to change working patterns instead of retiring

    10. Why do people retire when they do? 1. Enjoy retirement (inertia?) 2. State pension age 3. Financial commitments 4. Chance to take early retirement 5. Family responsibilities 6. Contractual retirement age

    11. What do older workers think about the policy issues? want the right to continue as long as fit and able want the right to retire, and think Government policy threatens this think the skills and talents of older people are being wasted think that Government is trying to make people work longer to reduce the tax burden on younger people 27% think it reasonable to raise the state pension age

    12. Policy implications Abolish compulsory retirement ages Provide more part-time & flexible opportunities Tackle discrimination in recruitment Make home working easier Provide impartial advice and guidance

    13. Finally Treat older workers like younger workers and they will behave like younger workers Older workers would like to stay engaged but have more flexibility to combine life and work – so would many younger workers!
