Whole Grain Heroes 4th Grade Two 60 minute lessons In this lesson the “Whole Grain Heroes” teach the students all they need to know about whole grain foods. MyPyramid recommends that half of all our daily grain choices be whole. Students will learn the difference between whole and refined grains as well as how to identify whole grain foods. Whole Grains Pre-Test • Circle the examples of whole grain foods. • Oatmeal b. White rice c. Whole wheat bread • d. Popcorn e. Pretzels • f. Hotdog bun g. Whole wheat bagel • 2. Bags of Grains • Barley • White/Brown rice • Quinoa • Whole Wheat seed • Whole Oats • Old Fashioned Oats • Corn
Taste-testing • Give each student on a napkin 1 whole grain cracker and 1 refined grain cracker. • As a class, take one bite of the refined cracker. • Tell the students to let it sit on their tongue and observe what happens. • Repeat the exercise with the whole grain cracker. • Discuss the difference between the two crackers.
Look For: “Whole” listed first on the ingredients list Example: whole wheat, whole oat Watch out for: “100% wheat” “Multi-grain” “Stone ground”
Refined Whole vs Grains Read each food label carefully to determine if the product is a whole or refined grain. Write the name of each product in the appropriate column below. Refined Whole Choose 3 whole grain foods each day for more fiber and longer lasting energy!
