What we will be covering • Some Perspective re the growth and size of mobile technology • The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology • The relative advantages and disadvantages of each • How the Internet appears on a tablet • How to set up an Android device to access your email • How to download apps to a tablet or phone connected to the Internet • The Future of mobile internet • Questions Ideas Suggestions

  7. Some Perspective re the growth and size of mobile technology What do you think there are more of in the World? Personal Computers of any kind TV sets Internet Users Radios Mobile Phone Subscriptions People that use toothbrushes

  8. Some Perspective re the growth and size of mobile technology The World at the end of 2010 • 1.2 Billion personal computers of any kind • 1.7 Billion TV sets • 2.0 Billion internet users • 3.9 Billion Radios • 5.2 Billion total mobile phone subscriptions - and only 4.2 Billion people use a toothbrush Source ITU, Tomi Ahonen (Ex Nokia)

  10. Some Perspective re the growth and size of mobile technology What does all this mean? There is great potential for world wide growth in mobile internet. Some interesting facts: In 1909 E.M. Forster wrote Short story “The Machine Stops”, describing internet. But it was non mobile. http://www.plexus.org/forster/ In 2005 the then CEO of Google Eric Schmidt said “The future of the internet is mobile”. “People are mobile”

  11. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology Establishing some base knowledge Anyone never seen a Pad computer? Anyone not know what Android is? Anyone not know the difference between an Ipad and an Android Pad? Anyone not know the difference between a Pad and a Phone (Ipad and Iphone)?

  12. Photos of Pads Android Pads

  13. Photos of Pads Ipad with the Late Steve Jobs of Apple

  14. What Android is • A brand name (like Ipad, Windows 8 or Windows XP) • Linux-based operating system (for mobile devices) • Owned By Google • Released by Google as as open-source (ie it is free) • The world’s leading smartphone platform • 59% smartphone market share worldwide • A multi-channel, multi-carrier OS • About advancing open standards for mobile devices. For more information See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29

  15. Differences between an Ipad and an Android Pad Its like the difference between a Mac and a PC • Designed and marketed - iPad by Apple – Android – by numerous Corporations but all use the same operating system owned by Google • Operating System - iPad runs on iOS operating system, (proprietary, not free) – Android is the operating system and is free. • Revenue - Apple generates revenue by selling Ipads – Google generates no revenue from the sale of Android pads • Most of Googles revenue (96 % in 2011) comes from advertising on it search results • The companies associated with Ipads and Android Pads operate on completely different business models

  16. Difference between a Pad and a Phone • The companies associated with Ipads and Android Pads operate on completely different business models • Size, Pads are bigger • Phone Functionality, most pads don't have it, but some do Pads came after phones to counter the shortcoming of the phone's smaller screen

  17. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology What do you feel the differences are?

  18. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technologyAs PC stands for Personal Computer, PC's, Laptops, Pads and Phones are ALL Personal Computers. Their common use name is used in the following tables

  19. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology

  20. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology

  21. The difference between PCs, tablets and mobile technology Re the previous slides • The differentiations between devices tends to be marketing rather than technological • The saying "You get what you pay for" does not apply in computing • Because of technological concepts such as "Cloud Computing" some of the Differences between PC's, Laptops, Tablets and Phones may not apply ie The result of a particular function on low performance device such as a pad or a phone may appear faster than on a very fast PC. eg's Voice recognition and rendered images • The future technology is unknown

  22. The relative advantages and disadvantages of using the INTERNET on PCs Tablets and mobile phones What do you think they are?

  23. The relative advantages and disadvantages of using the internet on PCs Tablets and mobile phones

  24. The relative advantages and disadvantages of using the internet on PCs Tablets and mobile phones

  25. The relative advantages and disadvantages of using the internet on PCs Tablets and mobile phones

  26. How the Internet appears on a tablet But first, how do you operate a tablet or a phone • By gestures, ie touching the screen is some way (See next slide) I will be showing how an Android Tablet works. (you will see it operating on your screen) If you want to know how I am doing this, ask me at the end of the session

  27. How the Internet appears on a tablet The gestures functions of a tablet/phone. To Select or Activate something, touch it. Touch & hold : Touch & hold an item on the screen by touching it and not lifting your finger until an action occurs. Drag: Touch & hold an item for a moment and then, without lifting your finger, move your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. For example, you can drag to reposition shortcuts on the Home screen. Swipe or slide: Quickly move your finger across the surface of the screen, without pausing when you first touch (so you don't drag something instead) . For example, you can slide a Home screen left or right to view the other Home screens. Double-tap : Tap quickly twice on a webpage, map, or other screen to zoom. For example, double-tap a webpage in Browser to zoom in, and double-tap again to zoom out. Pinch: In some apps (such as Maps, Browser, and Gallery), you can zoom in and out by placing two fingers on the screen at once and pinching them together (to zoom out) or spreading them apart (to zoom in).

  28. How the Internet appears on a tablet Getting around the screen Back: Opens the previous screen you were working in, even if it was in a different app. Once you back up to the Home screen, you can’t go back any further in your history. Home: Opens Home. If you're viewing a left or right Home screen, opens the central Home screen. Recent apps Opens a list of thumbnail images of apps you've worked with recently. To open an app, touch it. To remove a thumbnail from the list, swipe it left or right. All Apps: Touch it to see all your apps and widgets

  32. How to set up an Android device to access your email 3 Methods • Use Browser • Use Email App • Use Gmail App

  33. How to download apps to a tablet or phone connected to the Internet 3 Methods: • Directly from the device (via Google Market, now called play store) • Initiated from a PC, but gets downloaded to the device • Copied to the device and use an App installer App to install it

  34. Some Suggested Android Apps • Any File manager (to manage files like is done in Windows Explorer, My Computer) • An App installer (if you want to install non-Google market apps) • Hackers Keyboard (makes keyboarding easier than the standard Android keyboard) • Wifi Keyboard (Allows keyboard input to be made from a computer) • Call Announcer, on a phone (speaks the contact name when a call is received) • Viber (Allows calls to be made via data services to other Viber users so costs less than mobile calls) • Wifi file Transfer (copy and move files to/from PC controlled by PC wirelessly) • Any Ebook reader (allows ebooks to be read) • Google Latitude (See where friends are, let others know where you are) • Simple Spreadsheet (do simple spreadsheet functions) • Open Office Documents (read any Open office document) • Documents to Go (read or write any MS Office file) • Google My Tracks (record where you have been) • Where’s My Droid (shows where you phone is if lost/stolen) • Motion Detection (can use for home security, takes a photo if something moves and emails it to you)
