Did you know that….. • Asbestos in building construction materials is not illegal. • The mineral used in older popcorn ceilings often contains asbestos. • Many building materials removed during mold remediation may contain asbestos, for example: Joint compound Ceiling tile Floor tile and mastic • You can assume a material is asbestos, but can’t assume it isn’t. (Testing requirement) • You are required to have materials tested for asbestos-containing material (ACM) depending on square foot (SF), not age.
Broward County Asbestos Requirements • Applies to all projects involving removal of asbestos containing material, building demolitions and building renovations • Statement of Responsibilities Regarding Asbestos must be submitted 10 working-days prior to initiating work
Broward County Asbestos Requirements 3. Notice of Asbestos Renovation or Demolition must be submitted 10 working-days prior to initiating work 4. Notice must be accompanied by an asbestos survey 5. Survey must be prepared by or under the supervision of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Consultant (LAC), and bear the original signature of the LAC
Broward County Asbestos Requirements • For popcorn removal or mold remediation projects where no Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) was found, asbestos survey must be retained at the site • Survey must be conducted using one of the survey and sampling protocols approved by the state of Florida.
Broward County Asbestos Requirements • Phase I Environmental Site Assessments not conducted using an approved sampling protocol will not be accepted by EPD
Broward County Asbestos Requirements • Laboratory conducting analysis of samples for an asbestos survey must be accredited by NVLAP, AIHA or comparable program recognized by Broward County
Broward County Asbestos Requirements • Owner or operator must take reasonable precautions to prevent unconfined emissions of particulate matter (a.k.a. dust)
