  6. What’s the problem? What is Conversational Leadership in response to?

  7. Our world is a mess At all levels personal, family, business, societal, global depression, divorce, disruption, polarization, global warming

  8. Our world ishyperconnected The Digital Economy Internet and World Wide Web Global financial system Supply chains and distribution channels Electricity, gas and water supplies International travel & transport

  9. Our world is complex Massive connectivity has led to a complex VUCA world Volatile, Unpredictable, Confusing, Ambiguous Complex is not the same as complicated World is inherently unpredictable Unintended/unforeseen consequences

  10. We are complex Human beings bodies and brains The way we interact is complex Anthro-complexity The we interact with our technical systems is complex Socio-technical systems

  11. Our old ways of thinking& working are failing Complexity has led to an inherently unpredictable world But we still try to plan and control things as though it was We don’t understand the world We don’t understand ourselves, our biases & our limitations

  12. The Outcome The mess we are in!

  13. ResponseConversational Leadership

  14. Conversational Leadership is about recognizing the extraordinary but underutilized power of face-to-face conversation and adopting a conversational approach to the way in which we live and work together.

  15. Why conversation? For all our knowledge, we have no idea what we're talking about. We don't understand what's going on in our business, our market, and our world. KM shouldn’t be about helping us to know more. It should be about helping us to understand. So, how do we understand things? It's through stories that we understand how the world works. David Weinberger The Cluetrain Manifesto

  16. Why leadership? I think "knowledge management" is a bullshit issue. I can give you perfect information, I can give you perfect knowledge and it won't change your behavior one iota.Knowledge is not the power. Power is power. The ability to act on knowledge is power. Most people in most organizations do not have the ability to act on the knowledge they possess. Michael Schrage, MIT

  17. Principles

  18. Embrace Complexity Thinking The problems the world is facing now, including ecological damage, natural disasters, poverty, species loss, political upheaval, refugee trauma, and even health epidemics, can all be described as complex, that is, they are born of circumstances that are multi-causal and non-linear. This complexity vexes the traditional problem-solving model of separating the problems into singularly defined parts and solving for the symptoms. The very nature of complexity undermines the familiar mandate to define goals and strategies to achieve pre-envisioned, single sector solutions. None of the issues above can be understood as stand-alone issues. These issues are wrapped in contextual interdependencies that require an entirely different approach in assessment, and action. Nora Bateson

  19. Take Responsibility Take responsibility for your thoughts, feelings, words and actions. To take responsibility for your life, is to take responsibility for your powers of thinking, feeling, speaking and acting, because this is the structure of all human experience. You create your life with your thoughts, feelings, words and actions. You take responsibility when you accept that the thoughts you have, are your thoughts coming from your mind. Dina Marais

  20. Become a Leader I view anyone with a sphere of influence as a “leader,” whether or not she has that explicit job description. Daniel Goleman We all have to lead at different times, we all have to contribute and find our voices and find what’s meaningful. I think this world is in trouble in a lot of ways and we need smart people everywhere … we just need everyone engaged.  Eileen Fisher

  21. Converse Conversation is the way that humans have always thought together. In conversation we discover shared meaning. It is the primal human organizing tool. Even in the corridors of power, very little real action happens in debate, but rather in the side rooms, the hallways, the lunches, the times away from the ritual spaces of authority and in the relaxed spaces of being human. In all of our design of meetings, engagement, planning or whatever, if you aren’t building conversation into the process, you will not benefit from the collective power and wisdom of humans thinking together. Margaret Wheatley

  22. Build Community An enterprise is a community of human beings, not a collection of human resources Henry Mintzberg How can you recognize communityship? That’s easy. You have found it when you walk into an organization and are struck by the energy in the place, the personal commitment of the people and their collective engagement in what they are doing. These people don’t have to be formally empowered because they are naturally engaged. Henry Mintzberg

  23. Getting Started Conversational Leadership

  24. It’s a personal commitment Conversational Leadership is for everyone, not just senior managers and executives It is not an OD or HR or change initiative It is something you choose to do as an individual It does not require permission Not just about organizational life, but family, community, society
