Sentences • Sentences contain… • Subject • the person or thing the sentence is about • Predicate • contains the verb and other words in the sentence • There are 3 kinds of sentences • Simple • one subject and a predicate • Compound • two or more simple sentences put together with a conjunction • Complex • more than one thing or idea and verb

  14. Sentence Contents • Early settlers hoped for new lives in the United States. • They explored new territory. • These people shared a dream of a better life. • They dared to cross the ocean. • They settled in the new land. • All built new lives. • Some regretted their decision.

  17. Types of Sentences • Simple • The dog is running quickly. • Compound • The dog is running quickly and the cat is sleeping. • Complex • The dog is running quickly and the cat is sleeping while I do my homework.
