  2. MILLIONS OF CHILDREN A YEAR DIE FROM IT… Not Famine Not AIDS Not War

  3. MALARIAa persistent disaster, in >90 countries worldwide What can be done? Is anybody doing it? The Hedge Fund Community is teaming up with the Malaria Foundation International (MFI) at Emory University in Atlanta, GA to raise awareness and support for malaria programs on a scale unprecedented throughout the United States.

  4. A Minimal Amount is Being Done “I presumed Malaria to be an even more urgent issue, a truly life and death concern. I fully expected to find that whatever could be done to fight malaria was already being done. Surely, I thought, the world community would not simply be standing by while millions of children were dying each year…but when my colleague Amir Attaran andI began to run the numbers on the levels of donor assistance to fight malaria, we barely found any numbers.” “MALARIA WAS NOT ON THE POLICY RADAR SCREEN.” “Malaria is utterly treatable, yet, incredibly, it still claims up to 3,000,000 lives per year, mostly young children, about 90% of whom live in Africa…” …Quotes from Jeffrey D. Sachs (Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University) in his book The End of Poverty

  5. “Malaria is Treatable…We Want to Help” Members of The Hedge Fund Community Our goals for fighting malaria are simple…Make people aware that malaria is probably the worst child killer ever, and it is getting worse. “The toll of malaria is even more tragic because the disease itself is highly treatable and preventable.” …President George W. Bush (June 30, 2005) We didn't realize how acute the malaria crisis in Africa was/is until recently when one of us saw Jeffrey Sachs being interviewed by Charlie Rose. We now realize we are not alone. Less than 5% of the people we talked to about this project have any clue that a large number of children are dying from malaria. Malaria can be beaten!

  6. Malaria – a way of life ?? Imagine, parasites multiplying, each day in our blood cells! This would be unthinkable in the United States! In many communities, living with malaria parasitesand the threats they impose becomes a normal part of life! Yet, this is a preventable and treatable disease !

  7. It’s Getting Worse "The Malaria epidemic is like loading up seven Boeing 747 airliners each day, then deliberately crashing them into Mt. Kilimanjaro."    Wenceslaus Kilama, Chairman, Malaria Foundation International, 2000. “Unless better drugs arrive soon in their villages and towns, deaths from malaria will most likely double in coming years”…(Deaths from malaria are rising as older medicines fail by Claire Panosian Dunavan in DISCOVER August 2005) Malaria need not be fatal.  If prevention fails, the illness can be treated. However, the most effective treatments include Artemisinin-containing combination therapies (ACTs) which – at prices of $1-$2 per dose - are ten times more expensive than traditional anti-malarials.

  8. Children and Malaria – The ‘Quiet’ Problem It is estimated that one to three million children under the age of five die every year in Africa from malaria. That’s bad enough, but the effects of malaria are even worse because of the global direct and indirect effects of malaria – with close to 500 million cases worldwide. There are large socioeconomic ramifications for children, their families, and their communities. Millions of pregnant mothers are also particularly vulnerable to the disease. There is little awareness that Malaria kills more children than AIDS and Cancer combined! THOUSANDS of children die EACH day from malaria!

  9. Children with Malaria Need a Voice! • There is no major organized malaria PR effort. • There is no significant malaria lobby in Washington. • There are minimal malaria education efforts in the United States. • There are only a few limited charitable efforts focused exclusively on malaria. These problems are exacerbated by the fact that there is minimal focus on proper and easily achievable goals to eradicate malaria. Instead malaria is normally subsumed under the overall banner of world poverty and global health. Malaria needs to stand out on its own. Only by making malaria an independent cause can it be eradicated.

  10. Global Attention is Growing Malaria, 1992 – 2005* Malaria Foundation International (MFI) 1992 -Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) 1997 -Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) 1998 -Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Supported Programs 1999-Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria 2001 -Malaria Research & Development Alliance 2004 -United States Presidential Initiative “Fighting Malaria in Africa” 2005 *These and other recent efforts indicate the world’s growing commitment

  11. A highly expanded effort is now needed. CHILDREN CONTINUE TO DIE EVERY 30 seconds….. This is why the Hedge Fund Community is teaming up with the MFI to bring exceptional business and marketing skills and help focus attention and work on this disease.

  12. Hedge Funds vs. Malaria Goals • Immediate Goals (underway) • Get the Hedge Fund Community actively involved fighting malaria • Raise individual and media awareness of malaria • Support non-profit organizations dedicated to malaria • Establish Malaria Free Zones (MFZs) • Long Term Goals • Raise political awareness and education on malaria • Raise money to research and control malaria • Implement programs that save lives, protect people, and stimulate investments in affected communities

  13. What is the MFI? Since 1992, the Malaria Foundation International (MFI) has led the fight against malaria as a true grass roots effort raising public awareness and education about malaria. “The MFI mission is to facilitate the development and implementation of solutions to the health, economic and social problems caused by malaria.” The MFI developed the 1st malaria website (malaria.org) in 1995 and the 1st major global media attention in 1997, and has partnered with many individuals and groups who have since joined this cause. The MFI is the first 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to malaria. The MFI has proven itself as an organization with a neutral, international, respected reputation for “taking a stand”, “getting things done” and “being there for the long haul”.

  15. “Hedge Funds vs. Malaria” Business Leadership ConferencesDeveloping Leaders to Lead the Fight Against Malaria • Attract attendees by providing an interesting format to learn about malaria worldwide, with an emphasis on Africa (where the greatest burden exists), global economics and marketing strategies from world leaders in their respective fields. • The goal is to generate long-term interest amongst the speakers and attendees in fighting malaria, and to raise money for malaria-related charities. • 100% of the money that is raised will be used to fight malaria. • The MFI’s “Hedge Funds vs. Malaria” conference at Emory University will act as a galvanizing event to involve more people in the fight against malaria. • Why Emory University? Emory has a demonstrated commitment to Global Health and Outreach Projects in collaboration with the Carter Center. The MFI’s Founder, Dr. Mary Galinski, is a member of Emory University’s faculty.
