  3. Epic Hero and archetypes • Archetype: a very old imaginative pattern that appears in literature of different cultures and time periods. Archetypes can be a character, a plot, an image, or a setting. • Epic Hero (character archetype): personify the values of the culture that creates them. • Reading strategy: paraphrasing—tell me what it is…

  4. Extended Journal • Beowulf Extended Journal: (1-2 pages double spaced): Due Tuesday • I want you to combine the two journal entries for this week. Talk about what a hero is and what it takes to be a good leader. What characteristics do leaders and “heroes” possess? What heroic qualities do we already see in Beowulf through the first 6 parts of this epic?
