  5. What is a science festival? • A modern, • interactive, • personal & engaged, • two-way communication method for science communication – always contact with PERSONS!

  6. What is a science festival? • Festivals reach new audiences for interest in science – • festivals go out TO the people • also special events for migration, disabled, social groups…

  7. What is a science festival? • The events are organised often in places unusual for science, • like railway stations, • public places, in shopping malls, • churches, museums • in tents, in parks, at the seaside

  8. What is a science festival? • A platform for dialogue of the public with the scientists • about scientific issues of importance for society – • with “concerned” scientists as “partners”

  9. What is a science festival? • Festivals take place every year for several days – • in every country of the EU (and many other countries) – • with great media impact and • large & NEW audiences • [Estimation: per year > 20 million]

What is a science festival? • Events are presented mainlybyscientists, by students, sometimes pupils, even actors – • in many different ways • from lectures to theatre performances, science cafés, dialogue games, from workshops to camps outside, and guided tours • citizen conferences, science parliaments

  11. What is a science festival? • Festivals consists of many presentations • in a city, like Genoa, Gothenburg • in a region, like Catalan around Barcelona • in a country, like Denmark, UK • with thousands of presentations • with many different formats

  12. What is a science festival? Festivals deal with different kinds of science (taught at European universities): • natural sciences and technology, • humanities and sociology – • discuss the role of politics, of law, of the media, of the education system, of religion – and • listen to the communities

  13. What is a science festival? • Festival presentations for specific target groups • from kindergarten to seniors, • from special interest groups (health, economy, sport, law, gender, fire brigade) • to “general public”

  14. What is a science festival? Cooperation with many other institutions • like universities and schools, • NGOs, • museums, • media, • research centres, • city marketing and administration

  15. Science festivals? We, EUSEA, work also for the EUROPEAN DIMENSION of science festivals for international collaboration of science communication actors and stakeholders

Objectives, Tasks of EUSEA • Meeting place for old/new organisers of science festivals • Networking between stakeholders of science festivals • Exchange of professional information and experiences • Distribution of models for best-practice • Finding new ways for communication, new target groups • Assisting in improving quality and professionalism • Assessing the European dimension

  17. New festivals • Motivate new festivals, e.g.: • Croatia, Serbia • Lithuania (with Vilnius and Kaunas) • Latvia (Riga, Daugavpils) • Estonia (AHHAA in Tartu) • Moscow (State University) • Murcia, Spain • Hungary (palace of Miracles) • Ukraine

  18. Facts • 2001: Started with 26 member organisations • 2011: ~100 member organisation • from 35 states • EUSEA Annual Conferences • [AT, DE, PL, IT, ES, IS, PT, CZ, IT, DE, SE] • EUSEA SEMINAR on organising festivals

Special Activities • First EU project EUSCE/X – analysing European science festivals; result: WHITE BOOK on science festivals • EU project WONDERS 2006 with 21 Carousel Events; Launch in Vienna, Finals in Helsinki + ECSITE, EUSJA • EU project WONDERS 2007 with 31 Carousel Events; Launch in Berlin, Finals in Lisbon + EUN, EUSJA • 6 times participating at the Korean Science Festival • EU project 2WAYS with 29 Partners, with special events on life sciences, science parliaments and assessment study • Participations at various festivals and conferences: Communicating European Research in Brussels, ESOF, EU presidency (e.g. Grand Palais, Paris), Science Festival in Beijing, AAAS in the US etc.
