Miniature Golf Project • Your group represents a golf course design and construction company • There will be 6 members per group with the following responsibilities • Course Designer • Consulting • Hole Designer • Accounting • Marketing • Technical Support
Course Designer • Make nine holes on Geometer’s Sketchpad, each as a separate sketch • Find area, perimeter, and direct distance to hole for each one • Be sure not to count interior edges between different areas • Use color • “Pocket” diameter is 3in., but you can use a point in the sketch • Show the scale for each hole • Assume all holes are flat • Make overall course map showing all holes • Use dilations and reflections to put all holes together • Show the scale used • Don’t worry about area between holes (or cost of constructing that area)
Consulting • List geometry standards used in making of course • Work alongside course designer to show hole-in-one route with a dotted line • Adjust hole shape if necessary • You should always make it possible to get a hole-in-one • Use reflections • Decide on realistic par for each hole (at least 2)
Sample Hole 1 • Area (with “pocket”) = 32.27 sq.ft • Perimeter = 35.91ft • Distance = 10.58ft • Par 2
Sample Hole 2 • Area (with “pocket”) = 33.62 sq.ft • Perimeter = 43.89ft • Distance = 8.95ft • Par 2
Sample Hole 3 • Area (w/“pocket”, w/o bumpers) = 21.35 sq.ft • Perimeter (w/bumper edges) = 40.59ft • Distance = 8.78ft • Par 3
Sample course layout • Uses sample holes 2,3 • Use rotations and dilations
Hole Designer • Make a scale model of a single hole • Use a shoe box, wood, styrofoam, whatever works best • Calculate area and perimeter using geometric formulae (not using GSP) • Indicate the scale
Accounting • You will need to come up with the costs of construction using the following data (and ignoring labor, etc.) • Turf:$1.25/sq.ft • Trim around hole, bumpers: $0.25/ft. • Cement bumpers:$2.50/sq.ft • “Pocket”:$5 each • Calculate the following: • Costs for each hole • Cost for each material • Total costs
Marketing • Decide on a company name, a golf course name, and golf course theme • Design advertising and/or other information • Design the score card, listing par and direct length for each hole • List course rules and costs to play • Lead the presentation of your group
Technical Support • Put all Geometer’s Sketchpad, Excel, and all other documents from your group members into a PowerPoint/MacWorks presentation • Make it look good! • Explain all the geometry used in the design of the course
Assessment • Each group is responsible for a PowerPoint presentation, a copy for me on diskette of your presentation, and a scale model of a hole; I’m not collecting anything else • Every group member gets the same grade, except for obvious exceptions • If you think you’re done with your job, help someone else in your group! • Each individual grade (for each job) will be a score from 1 to 10, then all of it scaled to 100 • This project is worth 2.5% of your grade • You will have 4 days of computer room time, with presentations on the last half of the 4th day • GET ORGANIZED ASAP
