Skills we will be focusing on this year in ELA Reading Literature • Plot structure • Literary elements • Textual evidence • Text marking and note-taking • Comprehension strategies Narrative Writing & Literary Analysis • Analyzing the writing task • Including precise language and academic vocabulary • Evaluating an authors’ arguments and specific claims • Comparing and contrasting common themes and topics • Developing a topic with relevant textual evidence • Organizing ideas using transitions and proper format • Developing plot with relevant textual references • Organizing ideas using a plot diagram Informational/Expository Reading & Writing • Citing Textual Evidence • Identifying elements of informational text • Evaluating validity of sources and data • Marking the text and note-taking • Comprehension strategies Argumentative Writing • Analyzing the writing task • Evaluating an authors’ arguments and specific claims • Including precise language and academic vocabulary • Developing the topic with relevant textual evidence • Organizing ideas using transitions and proper format
