Topic Sentences • Topic sentences put the main idea into words • Main idea is the thought that connects all the sentences together. • Topic sentences can be in any place a paragraph and sometimes not be there at all.
Introductory Sentences • Introductory sentences: • Gain a reader’s interest • Give Background information • Do not summarize the main idea of the paragraph
Transition Reversal • Transitions Reversals signal a contrary opinion or argument • Common Transitional Phrases: • But • Conversely • Even so • However • Nonetheless • On the contrary • On the other hand • Unfortunately • Yet
