A C-section is often performed when a normal delivery will put the baby's or mother's life or health at risk. WHO says that cesareans should be done based only on medical need. Some are also performed upon request without a medical reason to do so. • Established guidelines recommend that c-sections not be used before 39 weeks without a medical indication to perform the surgery. Sources says that in 2012 about 23 million C-sections were done globally. • Cesarean rate in Turkey is 50.4 per 100 births which is the highest compared to cesarean rate of world countries.
Advantages of C- section • The surgical birth can be scheduled in advance, making it convenient. • Predictable than a vaginal birth and going through a long labor.
Disadvantages of C- Section • Should stay in the hospital longer, two to four days on average. • Increases a woman's risk for more physical complaints. • Recovery period after delivering is also longer. • Babies born by surgery may have breathing problems at birth and even during childhood, such as asthma and greater risk of becoming obese as children.
