Lesson 1 REVIEW
C.B.R.: the # of people born per 1000 per year C.D.R. :the # of people who die per 1000 per year Natural Increase: The difference between CBR+(-)CDR Infant Mortality: # of kids (under 5) who die per 1000 per year Life expectancy: The # of years one can expect to live (usually when speaking of a certain country) World pop Growth increased rapidly from 1800’s D.R. dropped first, followed later by the BR falling
Reasons for high BR (why are/were many babies being born): No access to contraception Religious reasons Cultural reasons/values (some cultures value large families) Need more hands on the farm High Infant Mortality Lack of family planning
Reasons for high DR (why are/were many people dying): Low technology No/low access to health services Low education/knowledge about disease and sanitation Low hygiene Low nutrition (not able to produce surplus of food stocks) Vulnerable to mother nature
So, why did population growth change suddenly in the 1800’s?
Previously, Natural Increase was low because B.R. was close to D.R. EX N.I.= B.R-D.R B.R.=10 D.R.=9 10-9= 1 N.I.=1 So what changed? D.R. decreased!!!! Fewer people died (they lived longer) so populations grew.. Look what happens to Total Population after the D.R. drops!
Why did this happen? Partly because of the industrial revolution and general innovations of the time. Increased crop yields from mechanized farming Better nutrition from better farming Breakthroughs in disease prevention and sanitation Birth of early modern medicine The growth of cities and city life
BE CAREFUL!!!! We did not get to this point in class, but D.R. did not fall everywhere in the world at the same rate. Look at the next slide. What do 3 countries have in common? What about Hungary, in 1900 DR was still high..Why?
Changes in DR typically occurred in More economically developed countries (MEDC) first and spread later to the less economically developed countries LEDC). Even today, we still see the link between development and fertility (number of babies a typical woman will have in a country). What do you think the link is?
So, back to world population growth… why did the BR also fall after the DR did? Because of new the changesin society and technology and agriculture etc.. Many reasons for High B.R. disappeared!! Not so much need for hands on the farm Lower infant mortality Some more access to contraception (though often much later in history) Raising children becomes more expensive (as countries develop)
BE CAREFUL!!!! We did not get to this point in class, but B.R. did not fall everywhere in the world at the same rate. Many countries only experienced lower B.R. only very recently, and some countries still have high B.R.
