  1. VAN LOVEREN VINEYARDS (PTY) LTD ESTATE HISTORY The Van Loveren Vineyards has been in our family since 1937 when Hennie Retief sr. bought some land in the Robertson area. Previously the property was part of a larger farm known as Goudmyn (in English “Gold Mine” due to the large sum paid for the original farm. Later this farm was sub-divided and Hennie started farming on what was is now know as Van Loveren, named after Christina van Loveren – an ancestor whose bridal chest was passed down for generations. Hennie sr. made his first wine (a red muscadel) in 1939 and more vineyards were planted, more wine was made and a new cellar was built in 1963 when his sons, Nico and Wynand, grew older. From the mid 1990’s Nico and Wynand’s four sons joined the farm one after the other as they completed their studies. Today our four cousins are the driving force behind the company. With the Van Loveren brand entrenched, they introduced the well-priced Four Cousins range of wines in 2000. Released in 1,5l bottles, it hit the market with a big bang and today is South Africa’s biggest selling bottled brand. Also, Van Loveren is South Africa’s biggest family-owned winery.

  5. VAN LOVEREN VINEYARDS (PTY) LTD OUR WINEMAKER – DANELLE VAN RENSBURG Danelle’s interest in winemaking started when she visited a family-owned table grape farm at an early age. After extensive research of the wine industry she decided to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University. At this time there were very few woman winemakers in South Africa and she knew that this would be a big challenge. She received a Bachelors degree in Agriculture, majoring in Oenology and Viticulture. During her studies Danelle completed her first vintage at Laibach Vineyards in Stellenbosch. After completing her studies, Danelle went to visit Margaret River in Western Australia and worked a vintage at Amberley Estate. She then explored the wine regions in Australia visiting Clare Valley, the Barossa Valley, Adelaide and Sydney. A sudden change in plans took her to Switzerland, where she worked a vintage on a small family owned business in the Lake Geneva area, the French part of Switzerland. Here she gained insight and knowledge of producing wines in a cooler wine region. Thereafter she toured and stayed in the wine regions of France focusing on the Loire Valley.

  6. VAN LOVEREN VINEYARDS (PTY) LTD OUR WINEMAKER – DANELLE VAN RENSBURG When Danelle returned to South Africa in 2000, she worked another vintage in Robertson before joining Stellenzicht Vineyards in 2001 as assistant winemaker. In 2003 Danelle moved on to a winemaking position at Amani Vineyards. She received many accolades for her 2003 Amani Chardonnay, which was given 88 points in the US Wine Spectator Magazine in 2005. Danelle joined Van Loveren Private Cellar in Robertson for the 2007 vintage as winemaker. Danelle’s goal is to form part of an award winning winemaking team producing premium quality wines. Danelle received a double gold medal at the local Veritas Wine Awards in 2008 for her Wolverine Creek Chardonnay Reserve 2007, as well as a gold medal for her Wolverine Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2007. This is the first double gold medal for Van Loveren in 16 years. She was a finalist in the Woman Winemaker of the Year 2008 competition with her Wolverine Creek Shiraz Reserve 2007, and once again in 2009 for her Van Loveren Colombar 2009, where she had 2 wines in the top 10. At the recent 2010 Robertson Young Wine Show Danelle received 7 champion trophies for Van Loveren making this winery the best performer at the regional Young Wine Show for 2010.
