  2. Life • Eli was born on December 8th, 1765 in Westborough, Massachusetts. • Whitney died on January 8th, 1825 (age 65) in New Haven, Connecticut.

  3. Early Life • His mother died when he was 11. • At age 14, operated a nail manufacturing operation. • His mother apposed his request to go to college so he worked as a farm laborer and a school teacher to save money.

  4. Early Life Cont. • After saving enough money he prepared got Yale at Leicester Academy. He entered the class of 1789 and graduated in 1792.

  5. Inventions • Whitney was most famous for two of his inventions. • -Interchangeable Parts • -Cotton Gin

  6. Interchangeable Parts • Whitney was usually incorrectly credited with inventing the idea. • Championed for years as a maker of muskets.

  7. Cotton Gin • Removes seeds from cotton. • Hoped to decrease slavery, but he increased slavery.
