  7. 3 Basic Components of Investigations • Physical evidence • Witness statements • Suspect confessions

  8. Physical evidence • Forensics • Hair/Fibers/Trace evidence • Weapons (if used) • Computers/Cell phones • Related documents

  9. Witness statements • Eye witness—who saw what? • Material witness—someone with information related to the case. • Victim statements—Yes, victims are witnesses too.

  10. Suspect Confessions • “The nail in the coffin” • Answers any/all forensic questions • Gives the DA a “slam dunk”. We clear cases by conviction, not by arrest.
