Writing Boot Camp! Pt. 3 The Finishing Touches: Conclusions, Titles, Editing vs. Revising, Plagiarism
Conclusions • Conclusions are tricky for sure but here’s how to master them: • 1. Reminder of the Thesis…but DO NOT restate the thesis exactly. • 2. Restate why your evidence supported your thesis. Leave your reader with a FIRM idea of why you are correct about the topic. • 3. Thesis Development = thesis statement + one step further. Leave your reader with something to take away. Show how your conclusions regarding the thesis have developed a unique perspective.
Editing vs. Revising • Both are important; however, they are very different! • Revising or Revision: Takes a holistic look at HIGHER ORDER CONCERNS. These include: • Your thesis • Your topic sentences and how well they support your thesis. • Your evidence and analysis. Do they support and prove your topic sentences. • Your introduction and conclusion. • Editing: Takes a place AFTER revision. Corrects LOWER ORDER CONCERS such as: • Checking Anchors and Proper Citations • Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation • Inconsistencies in Tenses
Editing vs. Revising • As you are revising, think of each paragraph as a “Cup of TEA” • Topic sentence • Introduces a reason why your thesis is valid • Is arguable (NOT a fact) – must be supported by evidence • Evidence • Information that supports your topic sentence / shows the reader why your topic sentence is true • Includes the following: historical facts, direct or indirect quotes from reliable sources, analysis of primary documents, statistics / numerical data • Is properly cited • Analysis • “Final thoughts” that express the significance of the body paragraph • Explains why this information is important or how it had an impact • Shows how the information presented in the body paragraph helps prove your thesis statement MMMMM!!! A perfect paragraph for Ms. D and Mr. C!
Le Piece de Resistance: Your Title • Your title is the first part of your paper that your reader will be coming into contact with—SO MAKE IT GOOD! • Follow this simple formula: Something Witty Related to Your Topic: (include the colon) What You’re Really Talking About • Examples: • Love and War: An Analysis of Women’s Roles in The Things They Carried • Freedom is in the Eye of the Beholder: How Lennie and George Achieved Their Independence in Of Mice and Men
A Word on Plagiarism • According to Dictionary.com plagiarism is, “a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work; taking someone’s words or ideas as if they were your own” (Dictionary.com).
More Wordson Plagiarism • According to Dictionary.com paraphrasing is, “a restatement of a text of a passage in another form or other words, often to clarify the meaning” (Dictionary.com).
The Only Way to Avoid Plagiarism… • Citation, citation, citation • THE ONLY thing you have to do to NOT plagiarize is cite your sources • When in doubt…ASK FOR HELP!!!
