13A EQ: How do we use inverse operations to solve equations?
13A Review: An INVERSE OPERATION undoes an operation. It is the opposite operation.
- What operation will we use to solve ADDITION equations? x + 8 = 3 y + 7 = -4 2 + p = 6 ? The inverse operation for addition is SUBTRACTION!
- Example:
- What will we SUBTRACT from both sides for each of these examples? Subtract 8 from both sides Subtract 7 from both sides Subtract 2 from both sides
13A • x + 8 = 3 • y + 7 = -4 • 2 + p = 6 CW #1 Solve each equation using the example below as a guide:
Check your work… • 1) x = -5 • 2) y = -3 • 3) p = 4
13A In your notebook, write and complete the following sentence: To solve addition equations, we have to ___________________________ both sides.
- Share your sentence with a partner. Do you both have the same sentence? How do you know if you’re correct?
13A What operation will we use to solve SUBTRACTION equations? x - 11 = -5 y - 9 = 4 p - 3 = -7 ? The inverse operation for subtraction is ADDITION!
13A Example:
13A What will we ADD to both sides for each of these examples? Add 11 to both sides Add 9 to both sides Add 3 to both sides
13A • x – 11 = -5 • y – 9 = 4 • p – 3 = -7 CW #2 Solve each equation using the example below as a guide:
Check your work… • 1) x = 6 • 2) y = 13 • 3) p = -4
