  2. Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) During Weeks 2 – 4 of CSE 1111, TAs will be available at specific hours to allow students to demonstrate the ability to do word processing using Word and manipulate a spreadsheet using Excel. Later, there is an assignment involving finding information on the internet and sending e-mail. Later, instruction is provided on using the UTA Library on-line resources for research. CSE 1111 Week 2

  3. Computer Use Proficiency (CUP) CUP, as required by the University, is demonstrated for CSE majors in CSE 1111. So, demonstration of proficiency in (1) word processing, (2) spreadsheets, (3) library skills, (4) use of the internet and (5) email are required for satisfactory completion of the course, but measurement of these skills will not enter into the computation of the final grade. CSE 1111 Week 2

  4. Word exam Students should be able to create, modify, save and print a document. The university requires demonstration of the following abilities in Microsoft Word. Create a file Cut and paste text Copy text Save material to a file / name that file Underline text Bold face text Italicize text Justify text Change font size Change font face Double space the document Change margins Create a bulleted list Spell check the document Do something that likely requires use of the word processor’s Help facility, such as creating a table. CSE 1111 Week 2

  5. Word exam Students should be able to create, modify, save and print a document. There is a complete listing of the required skills for each of the CUP requirements. See the class web site (under CUP) for that listing. CSE 1111 Week 2

  8. Problem #2 What kinds of problems that existed prior to computers have been changed or made more difficult thanks to computers? (Identify at least 4) You might call these “computer ethical issues”. CSE 1111 Week 2

  9. Problem #3 In general, how are laws related to ethical issues? CSE 1111 Week 2

  10. Notes for Week 2 The topic: Case Study in Borrowing Computer Code From Deborah Johnson’s Computer Ethics 2nd edition, page 2 (written by Dave Colantonio). Jean, a systems programmer, is trying to write a new tutorial for use of her company’s computer system, which will be used in other office branches nationwide. Now, after months of tedious programming, Jean has found herself stuck on several parts of the program. … CSE 1111 Week 2

  11. Notes for Week 2 1) What is wrong, if anything, with the behavior described in the scenario? 2) Can you think of analogies with situations not involving computers that reveal the moral character of the behavior? CSE 1111 Week 2

  12. Notes for Week 2 3) If you think any of this behavior should be discouraged or prevented, what rules, laws or conventions might achieve this? CSE 1111 Week 2

  13. Notes for Week 2 You are to put your answers to these questions in a text file or a Word file, and save that file for later use. In fact, call the file for this week Questions_Week2 and name the file you created last week Questions_Week1. CSE 1111 Week 2

  14. Volunteer Opportunity Volunteers Needed DFW FUTURE CITY COMPETITION The Future City Competition - sponsored by National Engineers Week – is designed to inspire 7-8th grade students with engineering by challenging them to solve the real-world problems associated with building a livable city of the future. Hundreds of North Texas students have been working hard since October on their city concepts and will be bringing them to UTA, Nedderman Hall on Sat., Jan. 25. We need about 10 volunteers to help with coordination for the 7-8th grade students and the judges. Approx. time commitment - 6 hours (8am - 2 pm: we'll provide danish in morning and lunch). Come and see what these talented kids have in mind for the future and help to inspire them into engineering school. Let Dr. Peterson know if you’re interested. CSE 1111 Week 2
