Planet Presentation Lynn Anderson CSU Dominguez Hills NTA Meeting Oct. 10-11, 2005
Project Scope for CSUDH • Test Phase (current) • Create sites for Welch Hall Floor 1 (BDF), Floor3, Library Floor 1 (MDF) • Setup IDFs with equipment racks and telephone backboards on Floor 3, import faceplates, cables. • Create riser cable to BDF, and MDF • Revise as needed and move to production
Lessons Learned • Need good quality CAD files – need information about the different layers (architecture and text) • Decide on the scope of the project for test, revise if necessary for production. • Product Libraries – use manufacturers’ names (I.E., Cisco Catalyst 2950 …., not SW-48port-1U) • Cable Libraries – diagram cable runs in general before you define anything (see next slide).
Naming conventions - example Locations • Sites • [Bldg # (3)]-[Bldg Name]-[Floor #]-{Room #} • Buildings/Rooms • [Bldg Abbrev (2-5)]-[Room Number (3-5)] • OSP Access Points (i.e. Manholes/Vaults) • [MH/Vault]-[Unique ID] • Racks/Cabinets • [Bldg Abbrev(2-5)]-[Room Number(3-5)]-R[Rack # (2)] • Wall Boards • [Bldg Abbrev(2-5)]-[Room Number(3-5)]-WB[Wall Board # (2)] • Chassis • [Bldg Abbrev(2-5)]-[Room Number(3-5)]-R[Rack # (2)]-[Model Abbrev (3-6?)]-[Unique ID]
Lessons Learned (continued) • Naming conventions – decide what they are and write them down before you start entering anything! • Define campus tasks/assignments: • Project coordination • Data collection/cleanup • CAD file conversion • Site creation, libraries, location, and equipment creation • Data migration, spreadsheet creation • Daily MACs (who will do this when you are in production)
Demo CSUDH test site • Welch Hall 3rd Floor • Typical IDF (366) • Typical data rack (WH-366-R1) • Typical wallboard (WH-366-WB1) • Office location – faceplate connections • Riser cable • Welch Hall – Data Migration Wizard
What was easy • Creating sites (i.e., floors) and importing DXF files. • Defining Product Libraries ( as long as we have naming conventions). • Setting up location objects (i.e., racks) and filling with equipment (patch panels, Cisco switches, etc.) • Data migration (if you know the mapping)
What was difficult • Cabling – understanding different types of cables, their characteristics, and how to define them. • Cross-connecting cables – horizontal to riser in particular. • Setting up circuits – not everyone is clear on this yet. • Data migration (if you don’t have the mapping).
Next steps for CSUDH • Production • Phase I – create all sites, locations, equipments, import faceplates and horizontal cabling for all TII buildings and finish Welch Hall. (about 90-95% of campus) • Phase II – add pathways, OSP cables and connections between buildings • Phase III – add office equipment (PCs, telephones, etc.) and server rooms.
