Defining Garbage Let's construct a definition of garbage. unneeded things leftover waste stuff we can’t use anymore things that can’t be reused or recycled food, paper, bottles, plastics, wrappers, hair, kleenex, boxes, physiological wastes, Garbage is material that is no longer deemed useable by humans – us as individuals.
Defining Garbage Why do we have garbage? • We don’t know what to do with stuff we no longer need/want. • We live in a wasteful culture? • We make goods to be disposable. • Products age and stop working. • Once things are away they don’t exist. • We live in a consumer society. • We don’t design of products • Convenience • Consumer ethic – we want more, bigger, better, newer.........;.
Defining Garbage Where did our concept of garbage arise? • the loss of a conservation ethic • "waste not want not" • "use it up wear it out make it do or do without" • the frontier "western" ethic • resources as commons • new & improved
