  2. Fears • Public speaking is often cited as the number one fear • Spiders are number two • Death is third!!

  3. Picturing the Audience Naked Where does this really get anyone?

  4. Rules to Present by… • Know your audience • Know your presentation • Know a joke • Know how you sound • Know how you look • Know that this is NOT a fate worse than death!

  5. Your Audience Never forget who you are talking to!

  6. Audiences • An audience is much easier to control than separate individuals • In order to woo your audience, there are two things you must do • Find out what they want to hear • Figure out how to get your message across anyway

  7. Know what they want to hear • Research your audience • What is the average member like? • What is the average age? • What might they already know? • What are they expecting to learn? • What can these things affect? • Word choice • Body language • Your image

  8. Conveying “Your” Message • Stereotype! • Pretend the audience is just one person • Even if it is a big, fat, multi-headed person! • Make eye contact! • Making eye contact means making a connection. Making a connection is your number one goal!

Conveying “Your” Message • Consider letting the audience participate • Those who “don’t”, teach • They have a more vested interest • They may know more • You’re not as interesting as you think! • What does participation look like? • Show of hands • Flip chart responses • Find out what they need to/want to/already know • Let them talk, but not all the time • 10-Second rule

  11. What You Say • Vary your word choice • Get a thesaurus • No, a new one!! • Expand your vocabulary to expand their mind • Keep it conversational • Talk with your audience, not to them • Paint a picture

  12. What You Say • Humor always helps • Just make sure its funny • Test it out on someone else • Rewrite your speech • I know as professional presenters we always know exactly what to say • But, audiences may not know exactly what they are supposed to hear!

  13. How You Look • Gestures • Less is more • Use gestures with active words • Practice them in front of a mirror • Posture • Don’t forget what your mom told you • Don’t forget when to forget what mom told you!

  15. Methods of Practice • Full-length mirror • I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it, people want to hear what I have to say! • Tape record, or even better, video tape • Gather friends • Family • Coworkers • Nuns • Family pets • Rehearse small sections throughout the day

  16. You have nothing to fear, but fear itself! Well, fear…and death and spiders and public speaking

  17. Physical Preparation • Don’t consume dairy the night before • Unless you really need some Ben & Jerry’s • A clean mouth is a happy mouth • Look presentable • Go to the bathroom 30 minutes before • Vocal exercises help • Selling seashells and other tongue twisters

  18. Mental Preparation • "The audience's initial impression of me is made within the first three seconds of my appearance." • "I look better than I feel." • "A mistake will not matter much." • "The audience wants me to succeed!"
