The Byzantine Empire • The Byzantine Empire was formed from the Eastern part of the Roman Empire. It lasted for 1000 years until 1453. • Capital city was Constantinople; founded on an older city named Byzantium • Byzantine culture was a blend of: • Greek language and traditions • Roman legal system • Religious beliefs of the early Christians in the eastern Mediterranean region.

The Religion of the Byzantine Empire • Originally the people of the Empire practiced the same Christianity as the rest of the world. • Gradually their practices began to differ in important ways • By 1054 the Eastern Orthodox Church had formally broken away from the Roman Catholic Church based in Rome

Government of the Byzantine Empire • An emperor ruled over the entire Byzantine empire. • He was all powerful who claimed to rule by divine right • God had chosen them to rule • They had control over every aspect of life in their empire including church leaders • Unfortunately there were no rules for succession so bloody battles were often fought to determine the next emperor.
Justinian • The most famous of the Byzantine emperors was Justinian who ruled from 527-565 A.D. • Justinian gather legal scholars together to create a new law code that came to be known as The Justinian Code • He also helped to turn Constantinople into a beautiful city • rebuilt fortifications • Constructed beautiful churches
Art and Culture in the Byzantine Empire • The arts of the Byzantine empire represent a blending of Greco-Roman and Middle Eastern styles. • Onion-shaped domes were used to roof some rectangular buildings • Mosaic pictures continued to be popular • Icons came to be an important form of artistic expression
Language of the Byzantine Empire • Very few people continued to speak Latin. Instead the majority of people who lived in the Byzantine Empire spoke Greek • As Islamspread into the outer areas Arabic became an often heard language as well. • Eastern Orthodox missionaries developed a new writing system called Cyrillic for the Slavic people they encountered
