  2. A. Profile of the Course (ECO 2023: Principles of Microeconomics) • Large: 40 to 50 students 2. Diverse Ages: Entering freshmen to fourth-year upper class • Diverse Interests: Pre-Business • Pre-Social Work • Undeclared • Taking as an elective • Survey course, covering many topics 5. Focus of the class is to understand basic economics principles and theory—generally not “hands on.”

  3. B. The Community Partner • KPB, Inc. (first page of handout) a. A non-profit, mostly volunteer organization (3 employees) b. Objectives: - Educate on, and promote, litter removal, recycling, environmental protection • Organize volunteer programs to remove litter and marine • debris 2. “Clean and Green” Program (second page of handout) a. Recruit local businesses to agree to regularly remove litter from property, check dumpster lids, provide trash receptacles b. Benefits to Businesses: - Litter-free property is good for business - Promotion by KPB as an upstanding community member - Eligibility for “Litter Free Business” award

  4. C. “Clean and Green” Project in ECO 2023 (Fall 2007) • Structure and Requirements • a. Voluntary, extra-credit exercise: added 7 percentage points to final grade b. Minimally contact 10 businesses c. Write reflection paper d. $250 prize for top two students 2. Topics/Principles Related to the Course a. Negative externalities and their solution b. Power of incentives (reflection paper: third page of handout) 3. Summary of Project a. 5 participants out of a class size of 43 b. 57 businesses contacted, 14 recruited

  5. D. Issues and Lessons Learned • Issue: Materials not immediately available—not until early October 2. Lessons Learned - Voluntary Participation Drawback:Limits student exposure to civic engagement Benefit:Participants are motivated Future: Extra credit and reduce other required work • Readiness of the organization is important • Future: Formal guidance for CCE partners • Initiating CE is not hard—with reasonable goals and scope • For sustainability, think “evolution,” not “revolution”
