A Divine Birth Announcement Isaiah 6:9 Key Word: Gifts December 1, 2013 First Sunday of Advent
Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Four Names of Messiah Wonderful counselor – Wisdom Mighty God – Power Everlasting Father – Relationship Prince of peace – Rest
1. Wonderful Counselor - Wisdom • A “counselor” is one who is able to make wise plans and give wise counsel. Isaiah 11:2 - And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 28:29 - This also comes from the Lord of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
Apart from the revelation that God provides, there are no answers to these questions. In Jesus Christ we find the beginning of wisdom and the gift of true knowledge. • When Jesus came to earth he came as Wonderful Counselor, but he did not leave us when he returned to Heaven. He left the Holy Spirit to provide the wisdom that you and I need.
2. Mighty God - Power • Jeremiah 32:18 - You show steadfast love to thousands, but you repay the guilt of fathers to their children after them, O great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord of hosts, • We need nothing less than God himself in the person of Jesus Christ to save us and to empower us to live the Christian life.
3. Everlasting Father - Relationship • “Father” here is benevolent protector • “Everlasting Father” – Deity • Romans 8:15- For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" • Ephesians 1:4-5 - In love he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ,
4. Prince of Peace - Rest • Philippians 4:6-7 - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. • Romans 5:10- For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Summary • We have minds, we think and reason - our hearts need wisdom • We want our lives to make a difference – We need power outside of ourselves to do that. • We were not meant to be alone – we need satisfying relationships • We know that we have done wrong things and need to be forgiven – rest/peace with God
