Environmental Science Lab “Groundwater Pollution” • Recall from last day: • POROSITY refers to the amount of space between particles of soil • Fluid stored in and around pores of soil is referred to as GROUNDWATER • INFILTRATION is how water moves through pores in the soil, eventually reaching stored groundwater • A large collection of groundwater underneath soil layers where we draw drinking water from is called the AQUIFER SURFACE
Today’s Lab • 4groups of 4-5 students: • Groups 1 – SAND • Groups 2 – GRAVEL • Groups 3 – TOP SOIL • Groups 4 – CLAY
Lab Setup TIME?
What are we investigating? • QUESTION 1: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE SOLUTION TO FILTER THROUGH A GIVEN SOIL TYPE? • QUESTION 2: WHICH SOIL TYPE IS THE MOST POROUS? THE LEAST POROUS?
HYPOTHESIS?? PREDICTIONS??
