What Is the Himalayan Hot Spot Like? o The Himalayas stretch for three thousand miles over India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal. o The abrupt rise of the Himalayas results very diverse ecosystems that range from tall grasslands and subtropical forests along the foothills, to conifers and harsh climate in the higher areas. o The Himalayas are home to the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest.
Why are the Himalaya’s considered a Hot Spot? • Contains a large number of endemic species • Himalayan Mountains rise from less than 500 meter to more than 8,000 meters which results in a very diverse ecosystem
Biodiversity of Himalaya’s Plants: 10,000 species • About 3,160 are endemic • 5 endemic plant families ex:Tetracentraceae, Hamamelidaceae, Circaesteraceae, Butomaceae and Stachyuraceae • Eastern Himalaya is also a center of diversity for several widely distributed plant taxa, such as Rhododendron, Primula, and Pedicularis. Invertebrates: • Reptiles: 175 species only about 50 are endemic • Amphibians: 105 species, about 40 or more are endemic • Fresh Water fish: 270 species, only about 30 are endemic Vertebrates: • Birds: 980 species, only 15 are endemic • Mammals: 300 species, many are endemic to environment
