  2. 1. Introduction Communication Server / Mainframe DSAdvance is a reporting and charting interface specifically designed for use with Datastream’s financial data service. Explain Connections Datastream supplies data direct to the PC through a high-speed line to the mainframe.

  4. Online or Offline? • The default is to connect and go online when data is requested. Users can work offline and add to the project with Add New Request Getting Connected • Flash in bottom right corner of screen indicates connection. Tools / Connect Now • Right mouse click on flash in bottom right corner / Connect Now • Run Now to request report, chart or data immediately

  5. Data Coverage Datastream is a historical financial database with 4 main modules:

  6. DATA • Clean Data – Data is checked several times per day to strict business rules. • Regularly Updated Data – Data is updated daily. • Long History – Equities and Indices from 1964 and macroeconomic series from IFS from 1950.

The DSAdvance Screen • Five parts of screen • Database Selection – databases, • Program Selection – generate Overview, Chart, Report, Data or Comparison • Find field • Parameters – Set display period, data type and currency • Output Screen • Change window size • Drag & Drop splitter bars to resize Output and Project screens • Viewport Zoom button to enlarge or reduce the size of displayed reports or charts

  11. Finding Series • Select Equity tab 1. Simple Find - In Find type the company name, series name etc. Note: Do not use this option for Economic series. Better to use Filter. OPEN THE DATASTREAM NAVIGATOR: Free text search: free search Advanced search: set parameters 2. Find * - In Find type * + part of series name. E.g. *bp gives BP Amoco 3. Filter – alternative to using Find

  12. Example B: Chart of a single series - Bayer • 1. For Bayer use a Line chart to display Price over 3 years. • 2. Select the Price and Price Relative chart to compare Bayer with the DAX30 local index • 3. Change relative index to the MSCI Germany local currency index • 3’. Change relative index to the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 index (DJES50I)

  18. Part 3 – Select P/E Ratio datatype • 1. Press Datatype • 2. Show how to select P/E ratio • Note: Graph output has a limitation on the frequency of the data. Daily data can be displayed for up to 2 years; weekly data between 2 to 5 years and monthly data beyond. A fixed start date will display that data at weekly/monthly frequency so 31 of month will give month-end data.

Settings: Show options in MAV configuration box • 5. OK /Run Now

  21. Favourites – Save often used requests • Use the Favourites facility to store often used requests • To save Moving Average 20 day and 50 day in Fiat example: • After Run Now press Add Fav. Button • In Favourites type unique name (e.g. MAV 20 day & 50 day) • Confirm OK

  22. Report on a single series • gives a variety of useful reports. • Performance over 1, 3, and 12 months – Settings • Settings: Select relative index and performance periods • Default Index: Choose Market or Sector index • Periods: Select performance periods in ascending order

  34. 8. Time Series Data • The Time Series Dataselection downloads values from a single series between two dates at a specified frequency. • For several time series use • Multiple series\ Time Series Data • Use Add button

  38. 11. Project • Projects are a simple way of recalling frequently used reports, charts and data formats. Every request that is run is automatically added into the project box. • Save a Project: • 1. File\ Save As2. Save button Save Project if changes have been made. • Note: Default folder is “user”. File Extension = .ADV

  39. Project • New Project • A new project has a clear Request Screen and clear Project Screen • 1. Start up DSAdvance software2. New Project button Open a Project • To open saved projects to show default folder: • File/ Open or Open File button Update a Project • A project can be refreshed by clicking on the refresh button or by scheduling the Night Shift • 1. Refresh Current Request - updates single request • 2. Refresh Project - updates whole project • 3. Tools/ Schedule Night Shift – updates project automatically at programmed times and frequencies

Example M: Save project and schedule night shift • Save current project on local C: drive.Schedule project to be updated on the same day in 3 minutes with one off frequency. • Part 1 - Save Project • 1.   41. Toolbar • Refresh the currently displayed request with the latest Datastream prices or values. Refresh all requests in the current Project with latest Datastreamprices or values. Add request to Project for Scheduled Night Shift processing. Use the Add New Request button to add any number of requests to a Project so all requests can be processed together when you connect to Datastream. Delete the displayed request from the current Project.

  42. Download in Excel • Static data request • Static data can be requested for a number of series on a given time interval. Static data can be requested for: a) Single series b) List of series • a) PushSettingsto select up to 9 datatypes.
