  1. Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre Art Competition

  2. The Bukit Panjang Community Club (CC) and National Environment Agency (NEA) is organising an Art Competition from now till 25 September 2013. This will be a pre-event that will lead up to the Ground Breaking Ceremony of Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre on 3 November 2013 (to be confirmed later). The judging and selection of winners would be held in October 2013, with the announcement of the results and prize presentation during the Ground Breaking Ceremony in November 2013.

  3. Selected Artwork Selected artwork will be exhibited on the hoardings during the construction phase of the Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre. These selected artworks may subsequently be put on permanent display at the hawker centre upon completion.

  6. Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre was identified as the first of seven new hawker centres to be built over the next few years as announced during the Budget Debate 2012.   8. Hawker Centre Design Competition In a collaborative effort by the NEA and the Singapore Institute of Architects, a design competition for the Bukit Panjang site was held. The competition sought to generate fresh ideas and to secure the best design that serves the social and functional needs of the residents.

  9. Winning design of new Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre The BPHC design competition was launched on 11 June 2012 to commemorate the construction of the first hawker centre after 27 years. The NEA and the SIA co-organised the design competition for Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre and invited local architects to submit fresh ideas that could serve both the social and functional needs of the community. Special considerations were to be given to designs which proved attractive, practical and environmentally sustainable.

  10. The judging panel, co-chaired by Dr TeoHo Pin (Mayor of Northwest District) and Dr Theodore Chan (President of SIA), picked the winning design from SQFT Architects for its innovative ideas and consideration of the history and surroundings of Bukit Panjang.

About the Winning Architecture Firm SQFT Architects Pte Ltd, established in 2001, has been actively involved in various projects which includes consultancy for new additions and alteration works for schools and a statutory board.   12. After an intense four months of competition, the design by SQFT Architects, emerged as the winner among 32 other entries. The winning design, selected for its innovative and eco-friendly ideas, encapsulates the primary concepts of Bukit Panjang, which literally translates to “long spread of hills”, through its undulating curved roofs and built form to articulate its ever-changing topography.

Conceptualisation Key objectives of maximising natural ventilation, harnessing sunlight for natural lighting and prevents rain water splashing showcase practicality while preventing glare and heat and providing shelter. The design also showcases eco-friendly features. SQFT Architects are designing a rainwater harvesting system whereby the collection of surface water run-off from drains and roofs can be collected into holding tanks and reused for general cleaning in the hawker centre.

Through the use of cross ventilation, the harnessing of sunlight for natural lighting while providing shelter, the design successfully interprets the requirements of a new generation of hawker centres through appropriate architectural and physical representation. The judging panel noted that the architect had also taken care to incorporate the surroundings into their proposal. In selecting this design, the judges envisioned that the new hawker centre would be an impressive and well-honed architectural presence – a successful interpretation of the brief and requirements for the new generation of hawker centres.

In the early days, the early migrants really did ply the streets of Singapore, selling food that fed a developing nation. But nowadays, our hawkers are all located in 'hawker centres’,purpose-built facilities where each stallholder has a little shop space to sell their food.

NTUC Foodfare, picked by the Government to run the centre, is looking into requiring each stall to offer one low-cost dish and imposing price caps on the food sold there.

  24. The group charges its tenants lower rents in exchange for price caps on the food, and requires them to seek approval before raising prices. The result: Basic items such as kopi-o and teh-o cost 80 cents a cup at most - among the cheapest. Each stall in its food courts also offers a low-cost dish, in addition to more upmarket fare for those who can afford it, so that the hawkers can make a profit while keeping the social objective intact.
